Synopsis Engineering Properties of Asphalt Mixtures and Their Relationship to Performance by : RL. Davis
Good performance for a highway, like any other product, is satisfaction of the user or customer. Most asphalt pavement users are well satisfied as long as the ride is smooth and the cost is low. The major purpose of this paper is to determine those engineering properties which result in a durable, smooth, low-cost asphalt pavement and to show how they can be controlled to assure continuing satisfaction of the road user. These properties are identified as being those that eliminate or reduce low-temperature cracking, reflection cracking, fatigue cracking, distortion and disintegration. Distortion or structural weakness can be eliminated by increasing the top size of the aggregate in the region of the weakness or increasing the thickness of the pavement depending on the type of distortion. Disintegration is controlled through softening the asphalt, increasing its content and the quality of the aggregate. Cracking is reduced through a combination of the foregoing factors. Proper management of these factors assures long term satisfaction.

Synopsis Performance-Based Properties of Asphalt Concrete Mixes by : RB. Leahy
Key objectives of the Strategic Highway Research Project (SHRP) A-003A were to validate properties selected for inclusion in the binder specification and to develop accelerated performance tests (APTs) suitable for predicting pavement performance in terms of fatigue and low temperature cracking as well as permanent deformation. This paper specifically addresses the laboratory tests, measured engineering properties and their relationship to the SHRP binder specification and to performance for both unmodified and modified mixes.

Synopsis Proceedings of the RILEM International Symposium on Bituminous Materials by : Hervé Di Benedetto
This volume highlights the latest advances, innovations, and applications in bituminous materials and structures and asphalt pavement technology, as presented by leading international researchers and engineers at the RILEM International Symposium on Bituminous Materials (ISBM), held in Lyon, France on December 14-16, 2020. The symposium represents a joint effort of three RILEM Technical Committees from Cluster F: 264-RAP “Asphalt Pavement Recycling”, 272-PIM “Phase and Interphase Behaviour of Bituminous Materials”, and 278-CHA “Crack-Healing of Asphalt Pavement Materials”. It covers a diverse range of topics concerning bituminous materials (bitumen, mastics, mixtures) and road, railway and airport pavement structures, including: recycling, phase and interphase behaviour, cracking and healing, modification and innovative materials, durability and environmental aspects, testing and modelling, multi-scale properties, surface characteristics, structure performance, modelling and design, non-destructive testing, back-analysis, and Life Cycle Assessment. The contributions, which were selected by means of a rigorous international peer-review process, present a wealth of exciting ideas that will open novel research directions and foster new multidisciplinary collaborations.
