Examines recent trends in end-use energy consumption in Canada, identifying and analysing the factors that have caused changes in the demand for energy. Also develops indicators of energy efficiency improvements, using a factorisation method to determine the contribution of energy efficiency to changes in end-use (secondary) energy use. Such a method allows an assessment of the underlying changes in energy intensity for each end-use sector and permits distinguishing the effect of changes in energy intensity on energy use from changes in economic growth and changes in the mix of energy-using products or activities. Economy-wide trends are described first, followed by sections on energy efficiency trends in the residential, commercial, industrial, and transportation sector. The final section analyses factors influencing growth in energy use in each sector 1990-94. Appendices include a description of the methodology and data sources for the factorisation analysis, as well as a glossary.

The main objective of this report is to provide analysis of trends in energy efficiency, energy consumption, and related greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. The analysis uses a factorization method that separates the changes in the amount of energy used by economic sectors into four factors: activity, sectoral structure, the weather, and effectiveness of energy use. Analyses of economy-wide trends in end-use energy, energy efficiency, and emissions are followed by analyses of trends in the following sectors: residential, commercial/institutional, industrial, transportation, agriculture, and electricity generation. This is the sixth annual review of trends in energy use, energy efficiency, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Canada, using 1990 as the baseline year. Chapter 1 describes the relationship between energy efficiency, secondary energy use, and GHG emissions, as well as the approach & data used to model these relationships. Chapter 2 presents results of the analysis of economy-wide trends in end-use energy, energy efficiency, and emissions. The remaining chapters describe the evolution of energy use & its major determinants along with trends in GHG emissions in the following sectors: residential, commercial, industrial, transportation, and agriculture. Appendices include information on data sources and methodology, a reconciliation of data on energy use in this report with Statistics Canada's Quarterly report on energy supply & demand, and a glossary.
