Synopsis Sufi Ritual by : Ian Richard Netton
This study reveals the world of Sufi ritual with particular reference to two major Sufi orders. It examines the ritual and practices of these orders and surveys their organisation and hierarchy, initiation ceremonies, and aspects of their liturgy such as dhikr (litany) and sama (mystical concert). Comparisons are made with the five pillars of Islam (arkan), and the Sufi rituals, together with the arkan, are examined from the perspective of theology, phenomenology, anthropology and semiotics. The work concludes with an examination of the Sufi in the context of alienation. This is a major work which highlights the importance of Sufi ritual and locates it within the broader domain of the Islamic world.

Synopsis Encyclopaedia of Sufism by : Masood Ali Khan
Conventionally The Word Sufi Is Considered Synonymous With The Word Mystic , But The Word Sufi As Used In Arabic, Persian, Turkish And Urdu, Has A Religious Connotation. The Sufis Claim To Have Inherited Their Doctrines Direct From The Teachings Of The Holy Prophet, Who, Strictly Speaking, Has Given No Dogmatic Or Mystical Theology. The Classical Sufism Of The Early Brotherhoods Was Strong On Simple, Straightforward Faith In Islamic Theology, Personal Devotion To God And Trust (Tawakkul) In Him Under All Conditions, Personal Loyalty To The Prophet Of Islam And Allegiance To The Qur An And The Shri At. The Faith Was Accompanied By The Practice Of A Well-Controlled Ascetic Life And In Many Cases Meant Renunciation Of The World. Then Followed The Khanqah Stage And Concentration, Between A.D. 1100 And 1400, On The Creation Of The Silsilah-Tariqah System, Its Organization, Its Rules Of Conduct And The Writings Of Handbooks Both On Esoteric Doctrine And On The Sufi Path. During Its Historical Development It Gathered Elements And Characteristics From The Intellectual And Cultural Climate Of The Region Concerned Which Transformed It Into A Bourgeois And Later A Mass Movement Of Wide Acceptance. The Fundamental Of Sufism Is God, Man And The Relation Between Them, Which Is Love. The Whole Sufi Theosophy Revolves On These Three Pivots. The Present Work Organised In 12 Volumes, Is Designed To Bring Together The Valuable Information On Suffism, Its Doctrines And Preachings, Main Orders, Prominent Sufi Saints, Their Life And Teaching, Etc. Synopsis Sufism by : Gholamali Haddad Adel
Sufism is one of the most ancient and widespread Islamic movements. A broad term, it is used to refer to a mystical and inward approach to faith. However, some Sufi groups have also had a significant impact on political or social developments in the Islamic world. This book discusses Sufism in virtually all regions of the Islamic world. Notable Sufi orders throughout history are described with a focus on their history, leaders, and distinguishing features. The relationship between Sufism and pre-Islamic traditions as well as other religions is also explored. This book is part of a series of translations from the Encyclopaedia of the World of Islam (EWI) which was originally compiled in Persian. Other entries from this encyclopaedia which are available in English include Hadith, Hawza-yi ‘Ilmiyya, History and Historiography, Muslim Organisations, Political Parties, Qur’anic Exegeses, and Education in the Islamic Civilisation.

Synopsis Encyclopedia of Islamic Civilization and Religion by : Ian Richard Netton
The Encyclopedia of Islamic Civilization and Religion provides scholarly coverage of the religion, culture and history of the Islamic world, at a time when that world is undergoing considerable change and is a focus of international study and debate. The non-Muslim world's perceptions of Islam have often tended to be dominated by unrepresentative radical extremist movements and media interpretations of events involving such movements, to the extent that many people are unaware of the depth and variety of Islamic thought. At the same time, many who have had a formal training in Islamic studies have tended to concentrate on the traditional, to the exclusion of the contemporary. The Encyclopedia of Islamic Civilization and Religion covers the full range of Islamic thought, in historical depth, but it also provides substantial coverage of contemporary trends across the Muslim world. With well over a thousand entries on Islamic theology, history, arts, science, law and institutions, and coverage of Islam in individual countries and cities around the world, the Encyclopedia of Islamic Civilization and Religion provides an extremely rich resource for students and researchers in religious studies and Middle Eastern studies. Entries are cross-referenced and bibliographies are provided. There is a full index. Routledge published The Qura'n: An Encyclopedia in 2005, an excellent companion to the Encyclopedia of Islamic Civilization and Religion.
