Synopsis Art's Emotions by : Damien Freeman

Despite the very obvious differences between looking at Manet’s Woman with a Parrot and listening to Elgar’s Cello Concerto, both experiences provoke similar questions in the thoughtful aesthete: why does the painting seem to express reverie and the music, nostalgia? How do we experience the reverie and nostalgia in such works of art? Why do we find these experiences rewarding in similar ways? As our awareness of emotion in art, and our engagement with art’s emotions, can make such a special contribution to our life, it is timely for a philosopher to seek to account for the nature and significance of the experience of art’s emotions. Damien Freeman develops a new theory of emotion that is suitable for resolving key questions in aesthetics. He then reviews and evaluates three existing approaches to artistic expression, and proposes a new approach to the emotional experience of art that draws on the strengths of the existing approaches. Finally, he seeks to establish the ethical significance of this emotional experience of art for human flourishing. Freeman challenges the reader not only to consider how art engages with emotion, but how we should connect up our answers to questions concerning the nature and value of the experiences offered by works of art.

Synopsis How Emotions Are Made by : Lisa Feldman Barrett

Preeminent psychologist Lisa Barrett lays out how the brain constructs emotions in a way that could revolutionize psychology, health care, the legal system, and our understanding of the human mind. “Fascinating . . . A thought-provoking journey into emotion science.”—The Wall Street Journal “A singular book, remarkable for the freshness of its ideas and the boldness and clarity with which they are presented.”—Scientific American “A brilliant and original book on the science of emotion, by the deepest thinker about this topic since Darwin.”—Daniel Gilbert, best-selling author of Stumbling on Happiness The science of emotion is in the midst of a revolution on par with the discovery of relativity in physics and natural selection in biology. Leading the charge is psychologist and neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett, whose research overturns the long-standing belief that emotions are automatic, universal, and hardwired in different brain regions. Instead, Barrett shows, we construct each instance of emotion through a unique interplay of brain, body, and culture. A lucid report from the cutting edge of emotion science, How Emotions Are Made reveals the profound real-world consequences of this breakthrough for everything from neuroscience and medicine to the legal system and even national security, laying bare the immense implications of our latest and most intimate scientific revolution.

Synopsis Emotional Experience and Expressions by : IJIP.In

Emotional experiences and emotional responses have been mostly considered a psychobiological phenomenon, which man genetically acquired from the animal world. Animals require emotionally controlled behavior for dealing with the survival needs, in terms of needs for food, safety, and sexual gratifications. These emotional responses may often occur without perception or awareness of the presence of the causative stimulus, which we have called processing of the unconscious mind. Outside this realm, man cognitively processes every emotional state and response, and labels them, which may be considered to have positive or negative effects on the individual and others. However, we are aware that the same emotional arousal is the driving force in every individual, and that man cannot lift even a little finger without emotional arousal. This phenomenal role of emotion has been largely ignored and many of us do not care for the proper emotional development of a child and strategic and sincere application of emotional arousal in the later years. The whole emphasis on the mind of man has been invested in many, on consciousness, which today we know is a mere fallacy. Learning to control emotional arousal is a basic lesson of social conditioning, which gives man ability to control thinking, actions and responses. Without emotional controls, actions and responses are automatically initiated, when the emotional arousal reaches certain critical level. Without emotional arousal man is a vegetative system, not capable of thinking, acting, and responding. Thinking and creating indeed form the foundation of growth for man.

This casebook is an excellent supplement to undergraduate courses in Behavior or Classroom Management. Cases in Behavior Management directly addresses the need of thought-stirring opportunities for students to apply and discuss the behavior management theories and practices on the uncertain and multifaceted terrain of real social problems. It provides realistic, context-rich narratives of behavior problems and social conflicts that developing professionals can ponder, puzzle over, discuss, and even disagree on. Each case consists of two parts: a quick description of the problem incident itself and in-depth coverage of the salient background information concerning the individuals involved, the immediate social context, the school setting surrounding that immediate context, and aspects of the community at large. Exclusive to the market, this book features 32 cases that realistically portray behavior management issues faced by teachers, parents, and other caregivers. It includes a full range of classroom-based cases that have occurred at the preschool through secondary grade levels.

Synopsis The Expression of Emotion by : Catharine Abell

The Expression of Emotion collects cutting-edge essays on emotional expression written by leading philosophers, psychologists, and legal theorists. It highlights areas of interdisciplinary research interest, including facial expression, expressive action, and the role of both normativity and context in emotion perception. Whilst philosophical discussion of emotional expression has addressed the nature of expression and its relation to action theory, psychological work on the topic has focused on the specific mechanisms underpinning different facial expressions and their recognition. Further, work in both legal and political theory has had much to say about the normative role of emotional expressions, but would benefit from greater engagement with both psychological and philosophical research. In combining philosophical, psychological, and legal work on emotional expression, the present volume brings these distinct approaches into a productive conversation.
