This document should be used for all forms of electrical design ranging from a new Greenfield site to modifying an existing final subcircuit. It provides guidance to managers of healthcare premises on how European and British Standards relating to electrical safety such as the IEE Wiring Regulations BS 7671, the Building Regulations 2000 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 can be used to fulfil their duty of care in relation to the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

This document gives best practice advice on the design and layout of cancer facilities within acute hospitals, primarily chemotherapy and radiotherapy facilities. Although it is aimed at new builds, the recommendations should be applied, where possible, when existing facilities are being upgraded. It describes a chemotherapy unit for the delivery of intravenous and intrathecal chemotherapy, and a radiotherapy unit for the delivery of external beam radiotherapy (teletherapy), as well as facilities for undertaking unsealed source radiotherapy and sealed source radiotherapy (brachytherapy). It also describes a dedicated out-patients unit (OPU) for cancer patients, although it is acknowledged that some trusts will use a shared out-patients facility. Reference is made to facilities that are not used exclusively by people with cancer but have a particular relevance.

This publication sets out best practice guidance on the design of healthcare facilities for children and adolescents, with the aim of creating a child-centred built environment. It is primarily intended for new-builds and upgrades of existing childrens facilities. Central considerations are alleviating fear and anxiety, maximising security and safety, reducing boredom, and creating a healing environment. Facilities should also cater for parents and siblings. This document sets out operational guidance on electrical safety requirements for high voltage systems in healthcare premises. The utilization of renewable energy sources such as wind energy, or solar energy, among others, is currently of greater interest. Nevertheless, since their availability is arbitrary and unstable this can lead to frequency variation, to grid instability and to a total or partial loss of load power supply, being not appropriate sources to be directly connected to the main utility grid. Additionally, the presence of a static converter as output interface of the generating plants introduces voltage and current harmonics into the electrical system that negatively affect system power quality. By integrating distributed power generation systems closed to the loads in the electric grid, we can eliminate the need to transfer energy over long distances through the electric grid. In this book the reader will be introduced to different power generation and distribution systems with an analysis of some types of existing disturbances and a study of different industrial applications such as battery charges.
