Synopsis Educational Equity in a Global Context by : Meira Levinson
How do we reconcile individual student needs with the demands of school, district, and national education programs? What are school-based professionals to do in situations where it is impossible to prioritize all students equally? A pair of new parents in Hong Kong deliberate which schooling model best fulfils the hopes and dreams they have for their children. An administrator in Germany deliberates whether to accept funding for a hybrid learning program as her staff and students share their conflicting experiences of online learning. From national policy to personal choices, each of these ethical dilemmas engages questions of educational equity. Educational Equity in a Global Context presents eight case studies designed to guide readers through complex and nuanced conversations about dilemmas of educational equity and ethics around the world. The case studies include conversations on student grading in the Covid-19 pandemic, the risks and rewards of online learning, equitable homework policies and refugee education. Each case is followed by a model conversation among diverse participants based in Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Kenya, Mexico, the UK, and the USA. The participants include scholars, activists, teachers, students, parents, and community leaders from across the political spectrum. Each chapter includes discussion questions and suggestions for further reading. Readers will come away from this collection with the resources and capacities to deliberate about dilemmas of educational ethics in their own contexts and work towards a more equitable future for students around the globe. More case studies and resources can be found at justiceinschools.org.

Synopsis Race, Equity, and the Learning Environment by : Frank Tuitt
At a time of impending demographic shifts, faculty and administrators in higher education around the world are becoming aware of the need to address the systemic practices and barriers that contribute to inequitable educational outcomes of racially and ethnically diverse students.Focusing on the higher education learning environment, this volume illuminates the global relevance of critical and inclusive pedagogies (CIP), and demonstrates how their application can transform the teaching and learning process and promote more equitable educational outcomes among all students, but especially racially minoritized students. The examples in this book illustrate the importance of recognizing the detrimental impact of dominant ideologies, of evaluating who is being included in and excluded from the learning process, and paying attention to when teaching fails to consider students’ varying social, psychological, physical and/or emotional needs. This edited volume brings CIP into the realm of comparative education by gathering scholars from across academic disciplines and countries to explore how these pedagogies not only promote deep learning among students, but also better equip instructors to attend to the needs of diverse students by prioritizing their intellectual and social development; creating identity affirming learning environments that foster high expectations; recognizing the value of the cultural and national differences that learners bring to the educational experience; and engaging the “whole” student in the teaching and learning process.

Synopsis Educational Equality and International Students by : Stuart Tannock
In an increasingly globalised educational landscape, this book examines whether the principle of educational equality can be applied across nation state borders. Exploring the tension between the theory of educational equality and the reality that most educational institutions are rooted in local communities and national frameworks, the author thus probes the consequences for institutions, individuals and communities as the number of international students grows exponentially. A topic that has previously received limited attention, the author draws upon theoretical literature and an empirical study of how universities in the United Kingdom conceptualise and promote principles of educational equality for international as compared with home students. This pioneering work will be interest and value to students and scholars of international education, international students, educational equality and globalisation, as well as practitioners and policy makers.

Synopsis How to Achieve Educational Equity by : Howard Fields, 3rd
As educators, we must be as specific as possible when using certain terms, especially when those terms and our knowledge of them hold the keys to so many students' success. Considered by many to be one of the most important concepts in education to understand and apply, educational equity is a term that we are all familiar with, but may also have a plethora of meanings, depending upon the context in which it is used. Educational equity can be a lot of things, but it is certainly not the popular and overutilized image that depicts kids watching a baseball game while standing on boxes. To frame it in this manner oversimplifies the complexities associated with educational equity. Educational equity must be more intentional than that and thus, should be defined as creating and/or eliminating policies, systems, and practices in schools that impact the experiences, outcomes, and access to resources for students from previously excluded groups. On April 9th, How to Achieve Educational Equity will provide educational experiences and actionable steps to help all those who have decided to embark on the educational equity journey. The author, Dr. Howard E. Fields III, possesses the reputability, knowledge, credentials, and writing prowess to adequately convey such an important topic that will certainly challenge our thinking and enhance learning outcomes for all students. As an Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Adjunct Professor, Co-founder of both Black Males in Education St. Louis (BMESTL) and EduOpenings.com, his perspective and focus on remaining student-centered, yet equity-focused, has made him an emerging sought out speaker. Dr. Fields' unapologetic leadership and authenticity played a role in being recognized as the 2020 National Elementary Distinguished Principal from Missouri and the 2017 International Networked Digital Library of Thesis and Dissertation innovative research award recipient. Given all of this, How to Achieve Educational Equity will certainly be a successful resource in the education and educational policy area for years to come. Early feedback from educational practitioners includes the following review: "How to Achieve Educational Equity is truly a thought provoking and practical call to action that will benefit many educators for years to come, regardless of where they are in their understanding of equity. Dr. Fields has created a concrete framework equipped with multiple entry points into taking action towards achieving equity in schools. This book makes inequities - arguably the most insurmountable issue in education to date - feel possible to tackle through courage, collaboration, and accountability. Thank you, Dr. Fields, for your contribution to the field of education!" - Dr. Shenita Mayes, Middle School Principal

Synopsis Education, Poverty and Global Goals for Gender Equality by : Elaine Unterhalter
Drawing on case-study research that examined initiatives which engaged with global aspirations to advance gender equality in schooling in Kenya and South Africa, this book looks at how global frameworks on gender, education and poverty are interpreted in local settings and the politics of implementation. It discusses the forms of global agreements in particular contexts, and allows for an appraisal of how they have been understood by the people who implement them. By using an innovative approach to comparative cross country research, the book illuminates how ideas and actions connect and disconnect around particular meanings of poverty, education and gender in large systems and different settings. Its conclusions will allow assessments of the approach to the post-2015 agenda to be made, taking account of how policy and practice relating to global social justice are negotiated, sometimes negated, the forms in which they are affirmed and the actions that might help enhance them. This book will be valuable for students, researchers, academics, senior teachers, senior government and inter-government officials and senior staff in NGOs working in the field of education and international development, gender, poverty reduction, and social development.
