Synopsis Higher Education and Social Mobility in France by : Shirin Shahrokni

This book offers an in-depth sociological exploration of the social trajectories and experiences of children of post-colonial immigrants in France who are embarking on paths of extreme upward intergenerational mobility. The author draws on life history interviews with young adults of North African immigrant background, enrolled at or having recently graduated from the country’s elite higher education institutions, the grandes écoles, to delve into largely under-researched pathways and give a voice to high-achieving members of a population that continues to be collectively associated with difficulties to ‘integrate’. The volume constitutes the first sociological study to document, from the individual actor’s perspective, the everyday experience of racism within France’s elite educational institutions and to reveal the upward mobility experience to be informed by the interlocking effects of racial processes, immigrant ancestry, class background, and gender. Challenging the pervasive representation of descendants of North African immigrants as ‘unsuccessful’ and ‘unable to integrate’, this book sheds light on the experiences of the largely silent upwardly mobile members of a stigmatized minority group, revealing the strategies used to respond to the constraints to their mobility and the importance of familial histories of post-colonial migration, characterized by the former generation’s efforts, sacrifices, and resilience, in informing these ‘success stories’.

Synopsis Immigration, Integration and Education by : Oakleigh Welply

Winner of the 2023 Globalisation and Education SIG Best Book Award at CIES 2023! Immigration, Integration and Education offers a unique comparative analysis of the views and experiences of children of immigrants in school in France and England. It showcases how the theorization of children’s narratives can offer new methodological tools and insights in comparative education and help understand the different role of educational systems and discourses around issues of immigration, integration, race, language and religion. Presenting an in-depth analysis of children’s own narratives, this book offers a close comparative examination of the French and English educational systems, and the ways in which they impact on the experiences and identities of children of immigrants. The narratives of the children reveal the multiple forms of othering, discrimination and exclusion that shape their experiences in school, but also the multiple strategies they deploy to navigate these complex educational landscapes. It stresses that beyond national ideologies and philosophies of integration, structural and cultural aspects need to be explored to understand the role played by schools in the inclusion of immigrant populations. This book is an essential resource for academics, researchers and graduate students in the fields of sociology of education, migration studies, intercultural education, educational policy and comparative and international education. It will also appeal to those who are committed to addressing inequalities and discrimination in education.

Synopsis Social Equality in Education by : Ann Margaret Doyle

This book explores the development of education in France and England from the French Revolution to the outbreak of World War II. The author uses social equality as a framework to compare and contrast the educational systems of both countries and to emphasise the distinctive ideological legacies at the heart of both systems. The author analyses how the French Revolution prompted the emergence of an egalitarian ideology in education that in turn was crucial for propagating the values of equality, patriotism and unity. In tandem, the volume discusses the equally dramatic consequences of the Industrial Revolution for English society: while England led the world by 1800 in trade, commerce and industry, a strict form of liberalism and minimal state intervention impeded the reduction of educational inequality. This pioneering book will be of interest to students and scholars of educational equality as well as the history of education in France and England.

Synopsis Education and Identity in Rural France by : Deborah Reed-Danahay

Drawing on an ethnographic study of a remote farming community in the Auvergne, Dr Reed-Danahay challenges conventional views about the operation of the French school system. She demonstrates how parents and children subvert and resist the ideological messages of the teachers, and describes the ways in which a sense of local difference is sustained and valued, through a complex interplay of schooling and family life. This book explores the role played by history, identity, and power in local responses to a national institution. A significant contribution to the anthropology of education, this book offers fresh insights into the ways in which French culture is transmitted to the coming generation. Dr Reed-Danahay also provides lucid and critical discussions of sociological theories on education, including those of Bourdieu.
