And it is planned to publish the textbook in Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian and Indonesian. It shows that scientists of new generation and format are represented in the Republic of Uzbekistan. In February 2019, the leading academic economist, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Kalandar Abdurakhmanov presented the fundamental work in Uzbek language “Labor Economics, Theory and Practice”, devoted to modern issues of sustainable employment formation and strengthening the role of human resources in modern conditions of innovative development of the economy. During the International Conference “Plekhanov International Readings”, a global scientific conference held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2019, after acquaintance of the scientific community with this textbook, an idea of rector of the Russian Economic University named after G.V. Plekhanova, Victor Grishin to publish the Uzbek textbook “Labor Economics. Theory and Practice” in the Russian Federation in Russian language was put forward. It should be noted that the scientific community of a number of Central Asian states also showed their interest in this publication. This is due to the fact that the new, revised and updated edition of the textbook “Labor Economics. Theory and practice” of academician Kalandar Abdurakhmanov is a fundamental work, covering the latest achievements of this science. Writing of this textbook is totally a new step in the direction of high qualified personnel training that is full with innovative changes on a global scale. This book revolves around the idea that capitalism is not a democratic system and that a system of producer cooperatives, or democratically managed enterprises, gives rise to a new mode of production which is authentically socialist in essence and fully consistent with the ultimate rationale underlying Marx’s theoretical approach. The author argues that the cooperative firm system outlined in this book offers a rich array of non-economic benefits that justify its classification as a ‘genuinely socialist’ entity, with real potential for achieving true economic democracy.

The notion that there is no alternative to capitalism emerged after the fall of the Berlin Wall and made rapid headway due to increasing economic globalisation. More recently, this belief that there is no viable alternative has held firm despite the financial crisis, high unemployment levels and an ever-increasing gap between rich and poor. However, since the appearance of Benjamin Ward’s seminal 1958 article, economic theorists have been developing a workable alternative: a system of self-managed firms. The core argument outlined in this book is that a well-organised system of producer cooperatives would give rise to a new mode of production and, ultimately, a genuinely socialist society. This argument is developed through three key steps. First, following on from Jaroslav Vanek’s definition, it is argued that a ‘Labour-Managed Firm’, a firm which strictly segregates capital incomes from labour incomes, would implement a new production mode because it would reverse the pre-existing relation between capital and labour. Second, given that a system of these ‘Labour-Managed Firm’ cooperatives would reverse the capital-labour relationship, it is suggested that this would constitute a form of market socialism. Third, it is argued that compared to capitalism a system of producer cooperatives offers a wealth of advantages, including the potential for efficiency gains, the eradication of unemployment and the end of exploitation. Ultimately, this book concludes that self-management could take the place of central planning in Marxist visions for the future.

This book illustrates and discusses the major points of the economic theory of producer cooperatives, its evolution since the 1950s and links with Marxian theory. Most importantly, this book demonstrates that a system of producer cooperatives offers a wealth of advantages compared to capitalism. There is general agreement that the main benefit of this form of economic democracy is that people allowed to freely pursue their interests are happier than those acting on somebody else's instruction. The author argues that a system of democratic firms would eradicate classical (high-wage) unemployment and scale down both Keynesian and structural unemployment levels.

The book conducts a comparative study on the form of enterprise, focusing on broadly defined cooperative firms in comparison with conventional capitalist firms. It explores the essential advantages and disadvantages of the different types of firms and attempts to answer why capitalist firms are so prevalent in our economy. The book attempts to explain these questions from the viewpoint of "market failure" in the framework of standard microeconomic theory. In this analytical framework, it proposes an alternative system of business organization based upon consumer cooperatives and the market for their memberships, which can coexist consistently with the system of capitalist firms and the stock market within a single market economy. The existing studies of the cooperative sector have been rather ideological. The analytical framework that is presented in this book helps promote scientific exploration of cooperative and other types of firms, which are indispensable and potentially promising constituents of our society.

This book presents a systematic view of the cooperative sector of the economy from the standpoint of sustainable development. On the one hand, the book reveals the consequences of business cooperation for the implementation of global sustainable development goals, primarily in terms of environmental protection and food security. On the other hand, the book defines the essence of sustainable development of the cooperative sector of the economy as a demonstrative economic practice that reflects the general state of socio-economic systems. Scientific, methodological, and applied recommendations for the systemic optimization of the management of the cooperative sector of the economy in the interests of simultaneously achieving its maximum positive impact on the implementation of sustainable development goals, as well as maintaining its stability are proposed.
