His books - The Catcher in the Rye, Nine Stories, Franny and Zooey and Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction - were published between 1951 and 1963, and Salinger lived most of his later life out of the public eye. J. D. Salinger died in 2010.

Alexander Theroux has taught at Harvard, MIT, Yale, and the University of Virginia, where he took his doctorate in 1968.
