Synopsis Early Performance Analysis of Automation Systems Based on Systems Engineering Models by : Jens Frieben

Designing and scaling complex, networked automation systems is a challenging task. Developers must consider different kinds of influence factors that impact the system performance already in the early stages of the development. If performance bottlenecks are detected too late, costly corrections may follow and the commissioning can be significantly delayed. There already exist several approaches to predict the performance of a system under development. However, developers must identify and decide themselves which factors must be regarded for a performance analysis and to what detail. Therefore, developers usually require in-depth knowledge of the system which is -- at least to this level of detail -- not available until the discipline specific development starts. In particular it is not clear, which factors influence the performance of a PLC and how these can be used for an early validation of a system model. The first contribution of this thesis is the identification and creation of a list of influence factors that impact one or more quality of service attributes of an automation system. For each factor, a decision is made, whether it is available in the early development stages, what assumptions must be made by the developer, and what impact it has on the overall system performance. The second contribution is a method that enables developers of automated systems to define the identified influence factors in systems engineering models and to carry out a subsequent automatic performance analysis. The method includes a model for the specification of influence factors within an existing Systems Engineering model as well as an accompanying process. Based on these models, an analysis can be performed to predict the utilization of a selected PLC. The results can be used to evaluate the design of the automation in the early phases and, therefore, avoid costly and ... ; eng

Synopsis Managed Software Evolution by : Ralf Reussner

This open access book presents the outcomes of the “Design for Future – Managed Software Evolution” priority program 1593, which was launched by the German Research Foundation (“Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)”) to develop new approaches to software engineering with a specific focus on long-lived software systems. The different lifecycles of software and hardware platforms lead to interoperability problems in such systems. Instead of separating the development, adaptation and evolution of software and its platforms, as well as aspects like operation, monitoring and maintenance, they should all be integrated into one overarching process. Accordingly, the book is split into three major parts, the first of which includes an introduction to the nature of software evolution, followed by an overview of the specific challenges and a general introduction to the case studies used in the project. The second part of the book consists of the main chapters on knowledge carrying software, and cover tacit knowledge in software evolution, continuous design decision support, model-based round-trip engineering for software product lines, performance analysis strategies, maintaining security in software evolution, learning from evolution for evolution, and formal verification of evolutionary changes. In turn, the last part of the book presents key findings and spin-offs. The individual chapters there describe various case studies, along with their benefits, deliverables and the respective lessons learned. An overview of future research topics rounds out the coverage. The book was mainly written for scientific researchers and advanced professionals with an academic background. They will benefit from its comprehensive treatment of various topics related to problems that are now gaining in importance, given the higher costs for maintenance and evolution in comparison to the initial development, and the fact that today, most software is not developed from scratch, but as part of a continuum of former and future releases.

Synopsis Introduction to the Smart Court System-of-Systems Engineering Project of China by : Jianfeng Xu

This book discusses the overall development and use of smart courts from the perspective of system-of-systems engineering (SoSE) and its methodology, analyzes the relationships between the components, structures, environments, and functions of various systems, and illustrates the basic approaches to system design, specification, integration, operation and management. As the general introductory book of the China Smart Court Development Series, this book provides an overview of the development of Chinese people's courts in the application of information technology over the past two decades and outlines the key areas of exploration in the Smart Court SoSe project centered on the development practices during the 13th Five-Year Plan period. It also forecasts the future development and evolution of the smart court information system. The key topics introduced in the book, including the overall design of complex information systems, integrated interconnection networks-based system integration, judicial big data quality control and analytics services, various types of AI-enabled judicial services, quality and efficiency-oriented operation and maintenance services for large-scale information systems, etc., all came from the basic research of information science and theories, as well as the systems engineering practices of the Smart Court SoSe project. They not only reflect the latest findings on systems engineering and architecture methods in China and overseas, but also reveal many innovative approaches to SoSE methods and paradigms, which can be used for the design and continued development of smart courts at a new and higher starting point. It is believed that they can also serve as good examples and reference points for the development in IT application and complex information systems engineering in other sectors.
