This Toby anthology, compiled and presented by Professor Shira Wolosky, presents a substantial number of texts by a select group of poets, providing a gripping view of the creativity of nineteenth century American women that until recently was almost entirely lost to literary history. By focusing solely on the major voices of the time, and doing so in depth, the opportunity is given to engage deeply with the poetry; to see the range within each poet's writings and the relation between the poets. This poetry began the efforts at the redefinition of self, of America, and of womanhood, that continues to touch the lives and thoughts of so many today.
