Synopsis Carbonate Sedimentology by : Maurice E. Tucker

Carbonate rocks (limestones and dolomites) constitute a major partof the geological column and contain not only 60% of the world'sknown hydrocarbons but also host extensive mineral deposits. Thisbook represents the first major review of carbonate sedimentologysince the mid 1970's. It is aimed at the advanced undergraduate -postgraduate level and will also be of major interest to geologistsworking in the oil industry. Carbonate Sedimentology is designed to take the readerfrom the basic aspects of limestone recognition and classificationthrough to an appreciation of the most recent developments such aslarge scale facies modelling and isotope geochemistry. Novelaspects of the book include a detailed review of carbonatemineralogy, non-marine carbonate depositional environments and anin-depth look at carbonate deposition and diagenesis throughgeologic time. In addition, the reviews of individual depositionalsystems stress a process-based approach rather than one centered onsimple comparative sedimentology. The unique quality of this bookis that it contains integrated reviews of carbonate sedimentologyand diagenesis, within one volume.

Synopsis Perspectives in Carbonate Geology by : Peter K. Swart

This special publication Perspectives in Carbonate Geologyis a collection of papers most of which were presented at asymposium to honor the 80th birthday of Bob Ginsburg at the meetingof Geological Society of America in Salt Lake City in 2005. Themajority of the papers in this publication are connected with thestudy of modern carbonate sediments. Bob Ginsburg pioneered theconcept of comparative sedimentology - that is using the modern tocompare to and relate to and understand the ancient. These studiesare concerned with Bob's areas of passion: coral reefs andsea-level; submarine cementation and formation of beach rock;surface sediments on Great Bahama Bank and other platforms; originof ooids; coastal sediments; formation of stromatolites; impact ofstorms on sediments; and the formation of dolomite. The remainderof the papers apply the study of modern environments andsedimentary processes to ancient sediments. Synopsis Contributions to Modern and Ancient Tidal Sedimentology by : Bernadette Tessier

Tidal deposits have been a specific research topic for about 40 years, and whilst this has resulted in a proliferation of papers in scientific journals, there have only been a few book-length syntheses. Over the years, tidal sedimentology has been reinforced by fluid mechanics and numerical modelling but has remained rooted in facies and stratigraphic studies. Recent developments in tidal sedimentology lean toward a more quantitative assessment of the imprint of tides in the facies record of intertidal and shallow subtidal areas. They highlight the increasing relevance of tidal deposits studies, from high resolution subsurface reservoir geology to climate change and sea-level rise. This volume gathers 17 contributions to the Tidalites 2012 congress held in Caen, France. It reflects current advances in the sedimentology and stratigraphy of tidal deposits, in both ancient and modern environments. It shows the current diversity of this field of research, through a wide spectrum of methods including remote sensing, in-situ hydrodynamical measurements, and ichnology, in addition to classic field studies and petrography.
