Synopsis Dust Explosions and Fires in Grain Separators in the Pacific Northwest (Classic Reprint) by : David James Price
Excerpt from Dust Explosions and Fires in Grain Separators in the Pacific Northwest Early results prior to the opening of the threshing season indicated that Opinion as to the cause Of explosions and fires Of this nature was divided between natural causes and incendiarism. The principal reason advanced for this latter conclusion was that prior to the 1914 season explosions were not very frequent. This led to the conclusion that means were being - taken maliciously to destroy the separators by introducing matches and explosives into the grain bundles. Synopsis Grain Dust Explosion Prevention (Classic Reprint) by : United States Grain Corporation
Excerpt from Grain Dust Explosion Prevention The workmen in this plant were not generally familiar with the causes of dust explosions and fires and methods that could be adopted for their prevention. The United States Grain Corporation assumed financial control of the grain dust explosion campaign in July, 1919, to make sure that the Government's stocks of wheat were fully protected at all times; other wise the work would have lapsed June 30, 1919, with the termination of the war emergency provision granted by Congress to carry on this work as a part of the food conservation program. Since this time, the United States Grain Corporation, in cooperation with the Bureau of Chemistry of the United States Department of Agriculture, has carried on an exten sive campaign to assist in removing dangerous conditions in plants carrying Government grain and flour stocks, and also to familiarize the grain and milling interests with the true nature and means of prevention of dust explosions and fires. The aim has been to lessen the inherent hazards in the grain industry. Throughout this campaign active cooperation has been given by many agencies and commissions engaged in explosion and fire prevention activities, and this opportunity is taken to acknowledge our indebtedness to these organizations, as well as to the grain and mill ing interests, for the excellent assistance rendered. Synopsis Just a Word about Grain Dust Explosions (Classic Reprint) by : United States Department Of Agriculture
Excerpt from Just a Word About Grain Dust Explosions Friction between any two dissimilar bodies will produce static electricity. A spark of this type started a fire in an elevator head of a Southern export house. Since the elevator heads and legs were completely boxed in and the machinery was operating properly, there was absolutely no possibility of any cause for this fire except static electricity. The dis charge ignited the dust in the elevator head, the flames burst out and caused a fire on the top floor. Fortunately, the plant was equipped with an automatic sprinkler system and the fire was extinguished before much damage was done. By grounding every ele vator head in the building, this danger was eliminated, and since that time no fire or explosion has occurred in this plant. Synopsis Dust Control in Grain Elevators (Classic Reprint) by : Hylton Roller Brown
Excerpt from Dust Control in Grain Elevators From 1919 to 1925 dust explosions in the United States in plants handling grain and grain products caused the loss of 133 lives, injury to 130 employees, and property damage amounting to more than As more than one-fourth of the loss in life and more than one-half of the property damage occurred in grain elevators, special attention has been directed to the elimination of the dust explosion hazard in the grain elevating industry. The requirements for a dust explosion are (1) dust in suspension in air in a certain proportion, and (2) some means of igniting this dust and air mixture.1 Such explosions, then, may be prevented by using equipment which will eliminate all sources of ignition around the plant, or by controlling the dust and air mixture so that no explosive dust clouds can be formed. For some time attention was directed to the elimination of open flames around plants where it was possible for the explosion hazard to exist. When it was found that electric sparks, blown fuses, broken electric lamps, hot bearin s, friction fires, metallic sparks, static electricity, and fires caused y spontaneous combustion could ignite the dust, however, attention was turned to the development of equipment for controlling the dust. More efficient work can be done in a clean, orderly, and well-run plant than in one where dust clouds are permitted to form. Further more, dusty atmospheres may affect the health of the workmen. Aside from reducing the dust-explosion hazard, then, the installation of dust-collecting equipment improves the health and efficiency of the workmen. Synopsis Prevention of Dust Explosions in Grain Elevators, an Achievable Goal by : United States Department of Agriculture
Excerpt from Prevention of Dust Explosions in Grain Elevators, an Achievable Goal: A Task Force Report In order to affect a problem, a solution must be implemented. To a large extent, this simple sine qua non explains why the problems of grain dust fires and explosions exist today. The United States has possessed the necessary knowledge and many of the prevention techniques for at least 60 years. It is obvious that they have not been adequately implemented. Otherwise, these prob lems would not exist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
