Issue 37 The rapid advancement of technology has brought forth a myriad of challenges and opportunities across various sectors. As we delve into the ever-evolving landscape, it becomes crucial to explore and address key topics that shape our society. This editorial covers the intersection of drones, menstrual period leave, AI in finance, and managing disagreements through a lens of progress and understanding. Drones, once confined to military applications, have expanded their horizons. With their versatile capabilities, they are transforming industries such as agriculture, surveillance, and delivery services. While the potential benefits are immense, it is vital to establish robust regulations to ensure safety, privacy, and responsible usage. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has disrupted the financial sector, revolutionizing processes such as risk assessment, fraud detection, and investment strategies. Yet, ethical considerations must be at the forefront when integrating AI systems to prevent biases, protect data privacy, and maintain transparency. Striking the right balance between automation and human oversight is key to leveraging AI's potential while upholding integrity and accountability. Inevitably, disagreements arise in our personal and professional lives. Understanding the psychology behind managing disagreements is essential for fostering healthy relationships and effective problem-solving. Synopsis States of Surveillance by : Maya Avis
Recent discussions on big data surveillance and artificial intelligence in governance have opened up an opportunity to think about the role of technology in the production of the knowledge states use to govern. The contributions in this volume examine the socio-technical assemblages that underpin the surveillance carried out by criminal justice institutions – particularly the digital tools that form the engine room of modern state bureaucracies. Drawing on ethnographic research in contexts from across the globe, the contributions to this volume engage with technology’s promises of transformation, scrutinise established ways of thinking that becomeembedded through technologies, critically consider the dynamics that shape the political economy driving the expansion of security technologies, and examine how those at the margins navigate experiences of surveillance. The book is intended for an interdisciplinary academic audience interested in ethnographic approaches to the study of surveillance technologies in policing and justice. Concrete case studies provide students, practitioners, and activists from a broad range of backgrounds with nuanced entry points to the debate.

Synopsis De Gruyter Handbook of Drone Warfare by : James Patton Rogers
In 2010, 60 states had a military drone program. Today at least 113 countries and 65 non-state actors now have access to weaponized drone technologies. Alongside this, established ‘drone powers’ – the U.S., China, Turkey, and Iran – have expanded their own use of military drones, increasing the sale and deployment of drones around the world. In the De Gruyter Handbook of Drone Warfare, drone expert, policy adviser, and historian, Dr James Patton Rogers, brings together 37 of the world’s leading voices on the growing issues of commercial and military drone technologies. From the origins of military drones in the early 1900s and the resurgence of drone use during the War on Terror, through to the global proliferation of drones across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, this handbook explores the moral, ethical, technological, legal, military, geopolitical, social, and strategic issues at the heart of drone warfare. The first handbook of its kind, the volume also addresses Russia’s offensive war against Ukraine, the rise of Iranian and Houthi drones, and provides a focused analysis of the future of drone warfare and the opportunities and perils of AI, autonomy, and swarming technologies in the coming Third Drone Age.

Synopsis The Economics of Defense Industry by : Thomas-Durell Young
This book on the economics of defence industry assesses a series of historical and contemporary case studies that consistently demonstrate the need for governments to recognise, and thereafter factor, the financial needs of a narrow industrial sector that is capital intensive, technologically advanced and that requires a highly skilled labour force. Since the end of the cold war, Western governments have systematically reduced financial support to their domestic defence industry and have seemingly ignored planning and funding industrial mobilisation. In all cases, government policy has been to encourage industries to consolidate capacity to become financially viable in a sector that has seen diminished demand. The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused Western governments to reassess their previous assumptions. Efforts to increase industrial capacity have been met with the iron laws of economics whereby businesses need to show return on investments. The chapters in this volume posit that efforts to rationalise industrial capacity and innovation to meet short-term financial efficiencies, inevitably results in limited, expensive, and long delays in increased production in times of international crisis. This book serves as an essential guide for academics, researchers and students interested in defence economics, industrial economics, international relations, and industrial policy. The chapters in this book were originally published in various issues of Defense & Security Analysis.
