Synopsis Dr. Newman and His Religious Opinions (Classic Reprint) by : Charles Hastings Collette

Excerpt from Dr. Newman and His Religious Opinions I cannot, however, dismiss the Eirenikon without adding a few further remarks. Dr. Pusey dedicates a postscript of some fifty pages to expose the fallacy of the doctrine of the personal infallibility of the Bishop of Rome for the time being, a doctrine which, he states, is now being seriously advocated 3 the Gallican Church, according to the Dublin Review, having now withdrawn all their former opposition to the doctrine. What he has written on this subject is sound, as far as it goes. But Dr. Pusey holds to the infallibility of the Church, which may mean anything to suit the moment, and must lead to the most intolerant sentiments; for, of course, he must set up his own standard as the measure of orthodoxy of the church which he alleges to be infallible. Synopsis Healing Children by : Kurt Newman

"A groundbreaking medical memoir by one of our nation's leading pediatric surgeons - the visionary head of Children's National - for fans of Jerome Groopman and Atul Gwande. Anyone who has seen a child recover from a deep wound or a broken bone knows that kids are made to heal. Their bodies are more resilient, more adaptive, and far more able to withstand acute stress than adults. And yet children are often treated as an afterthought by the medical establishment and shunted off to doctors who specialize in treating adults. Will an anesthesiologist accustomed to treating older patients know how best to handle a toddler going under for the first time? If your soccer-playing daughter suffers a concussion, should you take her to the nearest ER--or drive further to seek out doctors who specialize in treating kids? In this deeply inspiring memoir Dr. Kurt Newman draws from his long experience as a pediatric surgeon working at one of our nation's top children's hospitals to make the case that children are more than miniature adults. Through the story of his own career and deeply moving accounts of the brave kids he has treated over the years (and their equally brave and determined parents) he reveals the revolution that is taking place in pediatric medicine"--

Synopsis What, Then, Does Dr. Newman Mean? by : Charles Kingsley

Excerpt from What, Then, Does Dr. Newman Mean?: A Reply to a Pamphlet Lately Published by Dr. Newman Dr. Newman has made a great mistake. He has published a correspondence between himself and me, with certain "Reflexions" and a title-page, which cannot be allowed to pass without a rejoinder. Before commenting on either, I must give a plain account of the circumstances of the controversy, which seem to have been misunderstood in several quarters. In the January number of Macmillan's Magazine, I deliberately and advisedly made use of these words: - "Truth, for its own sake, had never been a virtue with the Roman clergy. Father Newman informs us that it need not, and, on the whole, ought not to be; that cunning is the weapon which Heaven has given to the saints wherewith to withstand the brute male force of the wicked world which marries and is given in marriage." This accusation I based upon a considerable number of passages in Dr. Newman's writings, and especially on a sermon entitled "Wisdom and Innocence," and preached by Dr. Newman as Vicar of St. Mary's, and published as No. XX. of his "Sermons on Subjects of the Day." Dr. Newman wrote, in strong but courteous terms, to Messrs. Macmillan and Co. complaining of this language as a slander. I at once took the responsibility on myself, and wrote to Dr. Newman.
