Synopsis The Legends of Bollywood by : Rāj Gurovar
Translated by SUCHITRA IYER Tales of madness, mischief & mayhem Before the overly dramatic movies with technologically enhanced backgrounds, simpler times existed. A compulsively readable collection of memoirs and stories of Bollywood’s who’s who, The Legends of Bollywood includes enthralling stories of the stars of the yesteryear. From Amitabh Bachchan’s first screen test to Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi’s baptism into Johnny Walker, and from Dharmendra’s journey from a tractor driver to a legendary actor to Dimple Kapadia’s iconic comeback into the industry, this book includes everything that’s good, bad, and fabulous in Bollywood. With never-before-seen pictures, it is a sensational book that narrates the tales behind celebrated births and lamented deaths, secret romances and controversial moments, booming films and unforeseen flops. Penned by a man who was a constant witness to these moments, these stories have been pulled from the archives of his myriad memories. Raaj Grover was the production-in-charge of the prestigious Ajanta Arts in Mumbai, which was owned by Sunil Dutt. Grover was an integral part of the Dutt family. During his days in the film industry, he also dabbled in filmmaking. A poet at heart, he is known for his witty take on life and his joie de vivre. He currently lives in the USA.

Synopsis Understanding Bollywood by : Ulka Anjaria
This book offers an introduction to popular Hindi cinema, a genre that has a massive fan base but is often misunderstood by critics, and provides insight on topics of political and social significance. Arguing that Bollywood films are not realist representations of society or expressions of conservative ideology but mediated texts that need to be read for their formulaic and melodramatic qualities and for their pleasurable features like bright costumes, catchy music, and sophisticated choreography, the book interprets Bollywood films as complex considerations on the state of the nation that push the boundaries of normative gender and sexuality. The book provides a careful account of Bollywood’s constitutive components: its moral structure, its different forms of love, its use of song and dance, its visual style, and its embrace of cinephilia. Arguing that these five elements form the core of Bollywood cinema, the book investigates a range of films from 1947 to the present in order to show how films use and innovate formulaic structures to tell a wide range of stories that reflect changing times. The book ends with some considerations on recent changes in Bollywood cinema, suggesting that despite globalization the future of Bollywood remains promising. By presenting Bollywood cinema through an interdisciplinary lens, the book reaches beyond film studies departments and will be useful for those teaching and studying Bollywood in English, sociology, anthropology, Asian studies, and cultural studies classes.

Synopsis Bollywood Storm by : N.K. Johel
Bollywood Storm is a lyrical and mystical murder mystery, set in Bollywood-style. With a dash of Kill Bill thrown in, this novel will not disappoint those readers expecting action; it’s also a meditation on self, identity, ego, intimacy, sensuality, spirituality, privilege and loss; and it’s got five song and dance numbers in it, too. The mazza of this story unfolds in two Books, spanning two continents Elanna Forsythe George is a Boston born, New York forensic scientist who takes on only cold cases, stone cold dead cases. She solves mysteries in unusual ways with her accidentally acquired, para-mystical abilities. Her cases come to her a few years after high-powered mainstream investigations, police and legal proceedings have all failed, and there's a dead end. But she doesn't take every case. Book I: New York Elanna is hired by the Bollywood starlet Simryn Gill to reopen the case of Rajesh Sharma, a Bollywood director who died of a supposed heart attack two years previous. Although it appears a simple heart attack, there is no drama, no gossip and no controversy anywhere in the Bollywood media. Somewhere, in that odd, conspicuous silence, Elanna smells a big rat.

Synopsis Bollyworld by : Raminder Kaur
Providing a critique of a common scholarly tendency in the field of popular Indian cinema, this text argues that Indian cinema cannot be understood in terms of a national paradigm, but must instead be considered as a field of visual and cultural production that interlinks diverse sites, in India and beyond.
