Synopsis Distributed Computer Control Systems 1994 by : J.A. De La Puente

One of the most important issues in the development of distributed computer control systems is the ability to build software and hardware which is both reliable and time deterministic; this is an area where control engineering and computer science naturally meet. This publication brings together the latest key papers on research and development in this field, allowing cross-fertilization between the two engineering disciplines involved and allowing both academics and industrial practitioners to find new insights and learn from each other's views.

Synopsis Distributed Embedded Control Systems by : Matjaž Colnaric

This fascinating new work comes complete with more than 100 illustrations and a detailed practical prototype. It explores the domains encountered when designing a distributed embedded computer control system as an integrated whole. Basic issues about real-time systems and their properties, especially safety, are examined first. Then, system and hardware architectures are dealt with, along with programming issues, embodying desired properties, basic language subsets, object orientation and language support for hardware and software specifications.

Synopsis Safety, Reliability and Applications of Emerging Intelligent Control Technologies by : T.S. Ng

Increasingly, over the last few years, intelligent controllers have been incorporated into control systems. Presently, the numbers and types of intelligent controllers that contain variations of fuzzy logic, neural network, genetic algorithms or some other forms of knowledge based reasoning technology are dramatically rising. However, considering the stability of the system, when such controllers are included it is difficult to analyse and predict system behaviour under unexpected conditions. Leading researchers and industrial practitioners were able to discuss and evaluate current development and future research directions at the first IFAC International Workshop on safety, reliability and applications on emerging intelligent control technology. This publication contains the papers, covering a wide range of topics, presented at the workshop.

Synopsis Event-Triggered and Time-Triggered Control Paradigms by : Roman Obermaisser

Event-Triggered and Time-Triggered Control Paradigms presents a valuable survey about existing architectures for safety-critical applications and discusses the issues that must be considered when moving from a federated to an integrated architecture. The book focuses on one key topic - the amalgamation of the event-triggered and the time-triggered control paradigm into a coherent integrated architecture. The architecture provides for the integration of independent distributed application subsystems by introducing multi-criticality nodes and virtual networks of known temporal properties. The feasibility and the tangible advantages of this new architecture are demonstrated with practical examples taken from the automotive industry. Event-Triggered and Time-Triggered Control Paradigms offers significant insights into the architecture and design of integrated embedded systems, both at the conceptual and at the practical level.

Synopsis Handbook of Multimedia Computing by : Borko Furht

Multimedia computing has emerged as a major area of research. Coupled with high-speed networks, multimedia computer systems have opened a spectrum of new applications by combining a variety of information sources, such as voice, graphics, animation, images, audio, and video. Handbook on Multimedia Computing provides a comprehensive resource on advanced topics in this field, considered here as the integration of four industries: computer, communication, broadcasting/entertainment, and consumer electronics. This indispensable reference compiles contributions from 80 academic and industry leaders, examining all the major subsets of multimedia activity. Four parts divide the text: Basic Concepts and Standards introduces basic multimedia terminology, taxonomy, and concepts, including multimedia objects, user interfaces, and standards Multimedia Retrieval and Processing Techniques addresses various aspects of audio, image, and video retrieval; indexing; and processing techniques and systems Multimedia Systems and Techniques covers critical multimedia issues, such as multimedia synchronization, operating systems for multimedia, multimedia databases, storage organizations, and processor architectures Multimedia Communications and Networking discusses networking issues, such as quality of service, resource management, and video transport An indispensable reference, Handbook on Multimedia Computing covers every aspect of multimedia applications and technology. It gives you the tools you need to understand and work in this fast-paced, continuously changing field.

Synopsis Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences by : Wade H. Shafer

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
