Changes in society and the workplace require a careful analysis of the algebra curriculum that we teach. The curriculum, teaching, and learning of yesterday do not meet the needs of today's students.

Synopsis Discovering Group Theory by : Tony Barnard

Discovering Group Theory: A Transition to Advanced Mathematics presents the usual material that is found in a first course on groups and then does a bit more. The book is intended for students who find the kind of reasoning in abstract mathematics courses unfamiliar and need extra support in this transition to advanced mathematics. The book gives a number of examples of groups and subgroups, including permutation groups, dihedral groups, and groups of integer residue classes. The book goes on to study cosets and finishes with the first isomorphism theorem. Very little is assumed as background knowledge on the part of the reader. Some facility in algebraic manipulation is required, and a working knowledge of some of the properties of integers, such as knowing how to factorize integers into prime factors. The book aims to help students with the transition from concrete to abstract mathematical thinking.

Synopsis A Concrete Introduction to Higher Algebra by : Lindsay Childs

This book is written as an introduction to higher algebra for students with a background of a year of calculus. The book developed out of a set of notes for a sophomore-junior level course at the State University of New York at Albany entitled Classical Algebra. In the 1950s and before, it was customary for the first course in algebra to be a course in the theory of equations, consisting of a study of polynomials over the complex, real, and rational numbers, and, to a lesser extent, linear algebra from the point of view of systems of equations. Abstract algebra, that is, the study of groups, rings, and fields, usually followed such a course. In recent years the theory of equations course has disappeared. Without it, students entering abstract algebra courses tend to lack the experience in the algebraic theory of the basic classical examples of the integers and polynomials necessary for understanding, and more importantly, for ap preciating the formalism. To meet this problem, several texts have recently appeared introducing algebra through number theory.

Synopsis Building Powerful Numeracy for Middle and High School Students by : Pamela Weber Harris

As secondary math teachers, we're often frustrated by the lack of true number sense in our students. Solid research at the elementary level shows how to help all students become mathematically proficient by redefining what it means to compute with number sense. Pam Harris has spent the past ten years scrutinizing the research and using the resulting reform materials with teachers and students, seeing what works and what doesn't work, always with an eye to success in higher math. This book brings these insights to the secondary world, with an emphasis on one powerful goal: building numeracy.--Page [4] of cover
