Detroit faces a number of crises; through bankruptcy, poverty, water shut-offs, privatization, emergency management, the infrastructure of the city is changing rapidly. What does it mean that Detroit is simultaneously advertised as opportunity? Whose interests are served by narrating Detroit? What are political effects of this discourse among the city's various constituencies? This study considers the politics of the discourse of opportunity in regard to Detroit as deployed by corporate advertisers in this moment in the city's history. Using discursive analysis of three promotional videos created recently by powerful land-developers (i.e., Hantz Farms, Opportunity Detroit, and Rock Ventures), I map the poetics (the meanings and knowledges produced) and the politics (discursive effects) of "Detroit-as-opportunity" discourse. "Detroit-as-opportunity" discourse is linked to "Detroit-as-blight" discourse. "Detroit-as-opportunity" discourse is constructed by its position as a solution to the problems of "Detroit-as-blight" discourse; this position simultaneously distances itself rom the ways in which it is culpable in creation of the poverty and racism it claims to solve.

This book explores the structure and use of academic and professional discourse through the lens of corpus linguistics. The goal of this book is to show how insights from corpus linguistic analyses can help us better understand how we use academic and professional language and help us find ways to better train newcomers to the genres used in various professional contexts. The contributions to this book show that specialized corpora of specific genres from a variety of fields allow us to make more relevant observations about the function and use of language for particular purposes. The specialized corpora examined include written and spoken academic genres, written and spoken business and legal genres, and written philanthropic genres. The book showcases a variety of approaches to analyzing the discourse of specialized corpora, and each chapter concludes with a reflection on the practical and pedagogical implications of the analysis.

Drawing on poststructuralist approaches, Craig Martin outlines a theory of discourse, ideology, and domination that can be used by scholars and students to understand these central elements in the study of culture. The book shows how discourses are used to construct social institutions-often classist, sexist, or racist-and that those social institutions always entail a distribution of resources and capital in ways that capacitate some subject positions over others. Such asymmetrical power relations are often obscured by ideologies that offer demonstrably false accounts of why those asymmetries exist or persist. Information Systems Research: Relevant Theory and Informed Practice comprises the edited proceedings of the WG8.2 conference, "Relevant Theory and Informed Practice: Looking Forward from a 20-Year Perspective on IS Research," which was sponsored by IFIP and held in Manchester, England, in July 2004. The conference attracted a record number of high-quality manuscripts, all of which were subjected to a rigorous reviewing process in which four to eight track chairs, associate editors, and reviewers thoughtfully scrutinized papers by the highly regarded as well as the newcomers. No person or idea was considered sacrosanct and no paper made it through this process unscathed. All authors were asked to revise the accepted papers, some more than once; thus, good papers got better. With only 29 percent of the papers accepted, these proceedings are significantly more selective than is typical of many conference proceedings. This volume is organized in 7 sections, with 33 full research papers providing panoramic views and reflections on the Information Systems (IS) discipline followed by papers featuring critical interpretive studies, action research, theoretical perspectives on IS research, and the methods and politics of IS development. Also included are 6 panel descriptions and a new category of "bright idea" position papers, 11 in all, wherein main points are summarized in a pithy and provocative fashion.
