This perspective paper examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global production and trade from the perspective of global value chains. Particular attention is paid to the transmission mechanisms and the role of digital technology in sustainable post-pandemic economic recovery. It argues that emerging technologies will be a driver of the global economic recovery, while the challenge to sustainable and inclusive global development will be significant, especially with regard to inequality and job creation. Also discussed are policy implications, to ensure this recovery is inclusive and sustainable, not leaving any country or people behind.

The health emergency that broke out in 2020 is a landmark event in the development of capitalism, confirming the underlying change signalled by the Great Crisis of 2007-9. The Pandemic Crisis has catapulted the state to the centre of economic activity. However, a historic impasse is steadily becoming apparent at the core of the world economy Productive accumulation is flaccid, as both profitability and labour productivity are weak. Financialisation has entered a new phase, as "shadow banking" grew relative to other banks but is entirely dependent on the state. The power of the state derives from command over fiat money and can certainly deliver enormous boosts to aggregate demand, but that is not enough to tackle the weakness of the productive sector. The rise in inflation for the first time in forty years indicates the impasse. There is a transparent need for intervention on the supply side, directly challenging capitalist property rights. There is no evidence, however, that the ruling blocs in core countries would engage in such policies. The Pandemic Crisis also brought to the fore fresh divisions of core and periphery across the world economy. Imperialism has assumed new forms, spurred by globally active financial capital and internationalised productive capital. A renewed contest for hegemony has emerged as US power declined. The economic challenge of China will unfold steadily in the years ahead, intensifying political tensions and military rivalries. This book is the work of a research collective comprising authors from several parts of the world. It analyses these vital issues from the perspective of Marxist political economy and puts forth alternative anticapitalist proposals.

Global supply chains have been struggling to devise a roadmap to recovery, to keep essential operations going, ever since the advent of the pandemic. We all experienced the empty shelves of sanitizers or toilet rolls in our everyday stores. Everyone loves a crisis except perhaps those living it. And these times are often the best to portray larger-than-life concepts because at some point in our lives, we all need a little reminder that we are not the center of the universe. Least we realize that we are in a borrowed space from our children and grandchildren, and immediately take to more sustainable ways, this rented place is doomed. All great events in history are probably not half as intriguing as the book or movies portraying them turn out to be. However, while others use the art of exaggeration, I have personalized the heck out of the entire supply chain operation. Using simple and jargon-free words, my characters in this story weave around the verticals of the supply chain and a circular economy to illuminate the concepts of the supply chain network, its management, and its close link with the circular economy. Therefore, the intention of this book is to provide an understanding of how the microcosm of sustainable supply chains, circular economy, political greed, and social activism evolves into trade-offs on the principle of optimality. People cannot be simply castigated into pro or anti-environmentalists, but the choices made are to be analyzed in the shades of gray, where only the brave tread into the twilight of living a life.
