Jahrhundert liegen die Ursprünge sowohl der Internationalität der Frauenbewegungen als auch des Aufbruchs von Frauen zu wissenschaftlichem Engagement in der Erforschung der Bibel und ihres sozialgeschichtlichen Umfeldes. Wer für die Gleichberechtigung der Frauen und gegen die Benachteiligung aufgrund des Geschlechts kämpfte, kam damals an der Bibel und ihren traditionellen Auslegungen nicht vorbei. Die Beiträge widmen sich Ländern wie Schweden, Finnland, Lettland oder Armenien, dem Schaffen von Literatinnen sowie der archäologischen Erforschung der biblischen Landschaften durch Frauen.

Nineteenth-Century Women’s Movements and the Bible examines politically motivated women’s movements in the nineteenth century, including the legal, cultural, and ecclesiastical contexts of women. Focusing on the period beginning with the French Revolution in 1789 through the end of World War I in 1918, contributors explore the many ways that women’s lives were limited in both the public and domestic spheres. In this book, Schroeder and Taylor introduce readers to the notable contributions of female commentators through the centuries. They unearth fascinating accounts of Jewish and Christian women from diverse communities—rabbinic experts, nuns, mothers, mystics, preachers, teachers, suffragists, and household managers—who interpreted Scripture through their writings. Peter Lampe's work has covered a wide range of fields, the common denominator being his interest in contextualizing belief systems. Luther übt systemische Kritik am Frühkapitalismus. Er durchschaut den religiösen Charakter des Kapitalismus auf der Basis des 1. Gebots. Seine Schriften zum Handel und Wucher (Finanzsystem) sind zwar im Protestantismus am Rande wirksam geblieben (wie z. B. bei Winstanley im 17. Jh.), aber insgesamt sind die lutherischen Kirchen dieser kritischen Perspektive nicht gefolgt. Erst in jüngster Zeit sind die Potentiale der Position Luthers für die Kritik am Neoliberalismus und für eine politische Ethik der Parteinahme und der Versöhnung wiederentdeckt worden. Luther systemically criticizes ealy capitalism. He is aware of the religious character of capitalism on the basis of the first commandment. His writings on trade and usury (finance) only marginally effected later protestantism (cf. e.g. Winstanley in the 17th century) but mainline Lutheranism did not follow this critical line. Only recently the potentials of Luther's position for the theological critique of neoliberalism and for a political ethics of partisanship and reconciliation were rediscovered.

This unique volume, nearly 2000 pages in length and handsomely printed on Bible paper, is perhaps the most comprehensive scholarly work of our time on the translation and interpretation of the Bible. At its core are papers presented to an international symposium in Ljubljana in September 1996 to mark the publication of the new Slovenian version of the Bible, a landmark in Slovene identity and cultural life. In addition, its distinguished editor, Joze Krasovec, has commissioned a wide range of contributions devoted to translations of the Bible in many languages, including the Slavonic languages, Croatian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish and the Scandinavian languages. Part II, on Slavonic and other translations of the Bible, includes the first detailed study of the history of the Slavonic Bible, by Francis J. Thomson (over 300 pp.). Part III, with essays by such scholars as J.H. Charlesworth, D.J.A. Clines, J. Gnilka, M. G÷rg, N. Lohfink and A.C. Thiselton, concerns the interpretation of the Bible in translation, philosophy, theology, art and music. In an appendix, a complete list of printed Bibles in languages throughout the world is presented for the first time.
