Synopsis A Dictionary of Climate Change and the Environment by : R. Quentin Grafton
A Dictionary of Climate Change and the Environment bridges the gap between the many disciplines encompassing climate change, environmental economics, environmental sciences, and environmental studies. It defines a comprehensive set of over 3700 words used across these fields to help policy makers, students, and professionals achieve a holistic view of environmental issues. The Dictionary also features: introductory primers to major topic areas; recommended reading for particular topics and specific words or concepts; and seven appendices, including a catalog of scientific symbols, units, and conversions, as well as an expansive listing and description of selected environmental treaties. The extensive and accessible nature of the content renders this book an indispensible reference for practitioners requiring an informed and balanced description of key concepts and issues. This resource will be extremely valuable to policymakers and professionals working on climate change and other environmental issues, and to postgraduate and undergraduate students in climate change and environmental studies, as well as to academics and other practitioners working on multidisciplinary environmental issues outside their areas of expertise.

Synopsis Dictionary and Introduction to Global Environmental Governance by : Richard A Meganck
This unique dictionary and introduction to Global Environmental Governance (GEG), written and compiled by two veterans of the international stage, provides a compilation of over 5500 terms, organizations and acronyms, drawn from hundreds of official sources. An introductory essay frames the major issues in GEG and outlines the pitfalls of talking past one another when discussing the most critical of issues facing the planet. It challenges those who are concerned with the management of our planet and its inhabitants to understand and accept a vocabulary common to the often-opposing objectives sought in the many GEG instruments. The result is a practical tool that should find a central place on the desk of anyone involved in environmental management, development or sustainability issues anywhere in the world, including the United Nations, government policy makers, NGOs and other stakeholder groups, the business community, and students and professionals. This fully revised and updated edition contains over 500 new entries and acronyms on global environmental governance as well a new introductory section on global water governance, one of the most pressing environmental issues in our era of climate change, growing populations and food shortages. Praise for the first edition:

Synopsis A Climate Vocabulary of the Future by : Herb Simmens
A Climate Vocabulary of the Future offers a compelling perspective on climate change that breaks down the formidable challenges facing our species and our planet -- rising temperatures, melting glaciers, and an indifferent global populace quietly overwhelmed by the science and inconceivable consequences of inaction. By skillfully explaining -- with humor, brevity, and clarity -- more than four hundred new, as well as often overlooked words and phrases, A Climate Vocabulary of the Future empowers readers with the information they need to both understand and act. For example, readers will learn the importance of dark snow, carbon war criminals, and negative emissions, as well as the background behind deceptively humorous phrases such as frozen chicken syndrome and robin carbon hood tax. Author Herb Simmens also offers many new ideas to inspire action before it is too late to save ourselves from ourselves. Use A Climate Vocabulary of the Future as a reference or as a creative way to learn the many dimensions of climate change. Above all, use it to acquire the words, images, ideas, and actions necessary to thrive in a world increasingly dominated by climate chaos.

Synopsis Historical Dictionary of the Green Movement by : Miranda Schreurs
Human beings have been concerned about nature and their place in it for millennia. Disquiet about the consequences of human action on the natural environment date back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. The efforts of the green movement can be traced back to the nineteenth century. In this period, individuals, groups, and organizations began campaigning for the conservation and preservation of natural areas and the protection of wildlife species. Efforts to combat pollution also began. It was not until the 1960s, however, that the green movement in its more modern incarnation emerged. The green movements that arose at this time maintained the concerns with conservation, preservation, and industrial pollution held by earlier generations, but added to their agenda new issues, including justice, equality, participatory democracy, and sustainability. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Green Movement provides a detailed and comprehensive overview of green parties and movements, green issues, and green concepts. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on countries in the world where green parties or proto-parties have formed, green movement organizations, major international environmental conferences, and green concepts. This useful reference will be greatly valued by students, academics, journalists, and policymakers alike.
