Synopsis Dictionary of Applied Math for Engineers and Scientists by : Emma Previato

Despite the seemingly close connections between mathematics and other scientific and engineering fields, practical explanations intelligible to those who are not primarily mathematicians are even more difficult to find. The Dictionary of Applied Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists fills that void. It contains authoritative yet accessible defin

Synopsis Characterization of SAR Clutter and Its Applications to Land and Ocean Observations by : Gui Gao

This book discusses statistical modeling of single- and multi-channel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images and the applications of these newly developed models in land and ocean monitoring, such as target detection and terrain classification. It is a valuable reference for researchers and engineers interested in information processing of remote sensing, radar signal processing, and image interpretation.

Synopsis Guide to Information Sources in Mathematics and Statistics by : Martha A. Tucker

This book is a reference for librarians, mathematicians, and statisticians involved in college and research level mathematics and statistics in the 21st century. We are in a time of transition in scholarly communications in mathematics, practices which have changed little for a hundred years are giving way to new modes of accessing information. Where journals, books, indexes and catalogs were once the physical representation of a good mathematics library, shelves have given way to computers, and users are often accessing information from remote places. Part I is a historical survey of the past 15 years tracking this huge transition in scholarly communications in mathematics. Part II of the book is the bibliography of resources recommended to support the disciplines of mathematics and statistics. These are grouped by type of material. Publication dates range from the 1800's onwards. Hundreds of electronic resources-some online, both dynamic and static, some in fixed media, are listed among the paper resources. Amazingly a majority of listed electronic resources are free.

Synopsis The New Walford Guide to Reference Resources by : Ray Lester

The New Walford highlights the best resources to use when undertaking a search for accurate and relevant information, saving you precious time and effort. For those looking for a selective and evaluative reference resource that really delivers on its promise, look no further. In addition to print sources, The New Walford naturally covers an extensive range of e-reference sources such as digital databanks, digital reference services, electronic journal collections, meta-search engines, networked information services, open archives, resource discovery services and websites of premier organizations in both the public and private sectors. But rather than supplying a list of all available known resources as a web search engine might, The New Walford subject specialists have carefully selected and evaluated available resources to provide a definitive list of the most appropriate and useful. With an emphasis on quality and sustainability, the subject specialists have been careful to assess the differing ways that information is framed and communicated in different subject areas. As a result the resource evaluations in each subject area are prefaced by an introductory overview of the structure of the relevant literature. This ensures that The New Walford is clear, easy-to-use and intuitive. - Publisher.

Synopsis Gaither's Dictionary of Scientific Quotations by : Carl C. Gaither

Scientists and other keen observers of the natural world sometimes make or write a statement pertaining to scientific activity that is destined to live on beyond the brief period of time for which it was intended. This book serves as a collection of these statements from great philosophers and thought–influencers of science, past and present. It allows the reader quickly to find relevant quotations or citations. Organized thematically and indexed alphabetically by author, this work makes readily available an unprecedented collection of approximately 18,000 quotations related to a broad range of scientific topics.

Synopsis Parallelism, Learning, Evolution by : J.D. Becker

This volume presents the proceedings of a workshop on evolutionary models and strategies and another workshop on parallel processing, logic, organization, and technology, both held in Germany in 1989. In the search for new concepts relevant for parallel and distributed processing, the workshop on parallel processing included papers on aspects of space and time, representations of systems, non-Boolean logics, metrics, dynamics and structure, and superposition and uncertainties. The point was stressed that distributed representations of information may share features with quantum physics, such as the superposition principle and the uncertainty relations. Much of the volume contains material on general parallel processing machines, neural networks, and system-theoretic aspects. The material on evolutionary strategies is included because these strategies will yield important and powerful applications for parallel processing machines, and open the wayto new problem classes to be treated by computers.

Synopsis Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology by : Jeffery Lewins

Our volume in the annual review series on this occasion represents a departure from our usual practice in that it serves as a Festschrift for Eugene Wigner. Dr. Wigner has won many honours in his long, wide ranging and distinguished career spanning so many upheavals in civilized life. The editors and the authors, indeed the whole nuclear engineering community, will wish to join in a modest but further acknowledgement of the contributions he has made to nuclear engineering, not least to the morality and professionalism of nuclear engineering in a year that has raised such international concerns over safety. It suffices to make a bald statement of Eugene Wigner's life and times here, for the first article of the volume is a loving appreciation by his long-time colleague, Alvin Weinberg, an evaluation of his contribution historically during and after the Second World War but equally an account of the philosophy which Wigner provided to the burgeoning profession. Eugene Wigner was born 17th November, 1902 in Budapest, Hungary and his early schooling is described by Dr. Weinberg.
