Synopsis Developing China's West Through Regional Zones by : Lu Zhongyuan
“Main functional zone” is a new concept and key initiative underpinning the national land use plan and regional development strategy. Planning and building main functional zones presents new opportunities and challenges for the massive development of western China, which is in a strategic transition phase at the present time. It is therefore necessary to pursue scientific policy design and management and improve coordination and interaction between central and local governments and across regions in order to promote linkages between the massive development of western China and the construction of main functional zones.

Synopsis China's West Region Development by : Ding Lu

While its 355-million population accounts for 28% and its land area for 71% of China's total, the region's share of the national GDP is under 20%. Since 1999, Beijing has implemented the West China Development Program to boost the region's growth. To study the major domestic issues and the global implications of this program, the University of Victoria's Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives organized and hosted a multidisciplinary international conference on March 6OCo8, 2003. This volume of papers presented at the conference offers perspectives on the issues by leading experts of diversified academic disciplines from China, Canada, the US, and other countries. It provides a focused analysis of the internal dynamics and regional economic diversity of China covering the eastern, central and western regions through case study, data analysis and review of state-initiated policy measures. The book also identifies and analyses existing and potential challenges facing China’s regions in their pursuit of sustainable development. The book examines the difference and similarities among local government policies to boost regional industrial and economic growth and assesses their implications and effectiveness. The author had conducted detailed studies in this field in order to bridge the existing research gap and the book will help to give rise to useful and illuminating discussion.

Synopsis Redevelopment of Western China by : Huiqin Yao
The book provides a systematic review of research results on regional economic competitiveness, and constructs an evaluation index system based on nine key aspects: the development of a micro-economy; industrial development; enterprise strength; the sciences; education; innovation; environment governance and protection; financial development; and the degree of opening to the outside world. The book subsequently provides policy suggestions on how to enhance the economic and social development of the West of China based on a comprehensive evaluation and analysis. In addition to comparing the recent social development of the provinces in the West, the book also calls upon the central government to play the leading role, encourage mass participation and promote the opening up of the West of China.

Synopsis Micro-analysis Of Regional Economy In China, The: A Perspective Of Firm Relocation by : Houkai Wei
The book presents the comprehensive research findings on the basic features, formation mechanisms and evolution laws of Chinese enterprise migration, from the micro-perspective of enterprise migration; and on this basis, the influences from enterprise migration on industrial agglomeration and diffusion as well as the evolution of regional economy. The migration trends, power mechanisms, determining factors, structural and spatial effects of Chinese manufacturing industry have also been studied. The author also puts forward policy advice on the themes above, such as the central government should pay more attention to the fairness goals in the market economy framework; some policies should be improved to positively and reasonably guide and regulate firm relocation in China, for example, enterprises from Chinese coastal areas should be encouraged to move to the mid and west areas; the industrialization and urbanization in mid and west areas should be accelerated; the economic development should be geared to the bearing capacity of natural resources and environment; industries and economic activities should be promoted to agglomerate effectively in metropolitan regions. This book provides a comprehensive analysis on the relocation of enterprises in China, as well as the situation of China's regional economic development. The author, Wei Houkai, as an authoritative economist on regional development of China, completed his detailed survey on China's regional economy from this perspective of enterprise relocation, together with his research group. This book, doubtlessly, provides a valuable opportunity for readers in English world to obtain the realistic and rational messages about what is happening in China in certain domains. The author, whose policy advice has always been adopted by the government of China, raises some significant viewpoints based on his distinctive insight, which may be influencing the regional development route in China.
