Synopsis Demon of the Lost Cause by : Wesley Moody
At the end of the Civil War, Union general William Tecumseh Sherman was surprisingly more popular in the newly defeated South than he was in the North. Yet, only thirty years later, his name was synonymous with evil and destruction in the South, particularly as the creator and enactor of the “total war” policy. In Demon of the Lost Cause, Wesley Moody examines these perplexing contradictions and how they and others function in past and present myths about Sherman. Throughout this fascinating study of Sherman’s reputation, from his first public servant role as the major general for the state of California until his death in 1891, Moody explores why Sherman remains one of the most controversial figures in American history. Using contemporary newspaper accounts, Sherman’s letters and memoirs, as well as biographies of Sherman and histories of his times, Moody reveals that Sherman’s shifting reputation was formed by whoever controlled the message, whether it was the Lost Cause historians of the South, Sherman’s enemies in the North, or Sherman himself. With his famous “March to the Sea” in Georgia, the general became known for inventing a brutal warfare where the conflict is brought to the civilian population. In fact, many of Sherman’s actions were official tactics to be employed when dealing with guerrilla forces, yet Sherman never put an end to the talk of his innovative tactics and even added to the stories himself. Sherman knew he had enemies in the Union army and within the Republican elite who could and would jeopardize his position for their own gain. In fact, these were the same people who spread the word that Sherman was a Southern sympathizer following the war, helping to place the general in the South’s good graces. That all changed, however, when the Lost Cause historians began formulating revisions to the Civil War, as Sherman’s actions were the perfect explanation for why the South had lost. Demon of the Lost Cause reveals the machinations behind the Sherman myth and the reasons behind the acceptance of such myths, no matter who invented them. In the case of Sherman’s own mythmaking, Moody postulates that his motivation was to secure a military position to support his wife and children. For the other Sherman mythmakers, personal or political gain was typically the rationale behind the stories they told and believed. In tracing Sherman’s ever-changing reputation, Moody sheds light on current and past understanding of the Civil War through the lens of one of its most controversial figures.

Synopsis Demon Lost by : Connie Suttle
"Reah, this is Commander Aris." Bel moved aside once we were inside the spacious office, and I received my first look at the outpost Commander. He stared at me for moments as I stood before him. I was so frightened I was afraid I'd burst into tears. He was a lion of a man with thick, shoulder-length dark-gold hair, swept back from his forehead. He didn't stand as his rank dictated, otherwise I think he would have dwarfed Bel, whom I thought was quite tall. The Commander's shoulders were broader, too and I imagined that he'd gained his rank by working for it. "Reah, how did those two miscreants bring you here when you were underage?" Commander Aris asked me after moments of silence. He sounded as if he'd just gotten his voice back. "They found me and told me I should come with them," I hung my head. I nearly jumped when I imagined that I heard a voice inside my head. I'm sure it was my fear-giving me hallucinations when there was nothing there. (Hush, no harm will come), the voice said. I drew a shaky breath and managed to put it out of my mind. The voice didn't come again. The High Demon race is dying, and nothing short of a miracle will save it. Kifirin has promised to provide that miracle, in any way he can. Reah has worked in the kitchens of her family's restaurants since the age of eight. The only daughter among Addah Desh's 27 children from eight wives, Reah has been ignored, belittled and abused all her life. When the conscription notice comes from the Regular Alliance Army, Reah is more than happy to report for duty, in order to escape her family. Unfortunately, her liberation is short-lived....

Synopsis The Demon of Chaos by : Consualo Williams
Shawn Laveau, a seasoned detective in the NYPD, is not prepared for the evil awaiting him during a stakeout in an affluent region of the city; when a syringe-wielding doctor murders his comrade and then evades arrest, Shawn is left disoriented and traumatized. Unable to shake the lingering terror, he moves to New Orleans, attempting to restart his life as a desk duty officer. Little does he know that he has been marked by an ancient evil that dwells within the bayous surrounding the city, buried deep beneath the muddy waters, awaiting its revenge—a revenge that originated long ago with the breaking of a sacred law. The ruthless demonic spirit soon finds its “puppet” in the form of a sadistic man—the murderous doctor himself—who serves his master in exchange for immortality, offering human sacrifices and orchestrating the conditions needed for the demon’s retribution. Soon a research facility is resurrected within the bayou’s depths. It’s built atop the remains of a psychiatric hospital that collapsed many years before as the result of unspeakable, unholy rites. Little does Shawn know that he and five others will come to know this place well—too well—as the hungry force beckons them there. Bound together by fate and relentlessly pursued by the undying spirit, these chosen six must find a way to overcome evil, lest they be devoured—blood, body, and soul.

Synopsis Demon's Quest by : Connie Suttle
"He wants to talk to you again," the girl winced. "I want to bust his nose," I muttered, making the girl laugh. I hefted the tray up and carried it to his table. "I had to wait two clicks to get in here." "I told you to call ahead," I said, settling the tray on a stand and handing off his noodle bowl, followed by the plate of ox-roast. "I thought you were making that up." "I never lie about food," I said. "Is there anything else?" I swept the tray off the stand. "Ex-ASD?" "That's what the Director said. And he's not high on my list, unless it's the list of people I never want to see again." "What's the problem with Director Keef?" "Where do you want me to start?" "Start with the most recent." "My dead daughter," I snapped and walked away. After Reah's brush with death, she is understandably distrustful of most of her mates. Striking out on her own, she is determined to investigate a rash of child disappearances across the universes, in and outside the Alliances. The evil she discovers in the course of her investigations could bring all worlds to their knees if Reah doesn't find a way to destroy it.

Synopsis A Demon's Work is Never Done by : Connie Suttle
Lexsi: Tears of flame dripped down my cheekstears for Kory and for me. The fire net burned my hands whenever I touched it, but I couldn't let it harm him any more than it already had. Kory's wings, with burn-holes between ribs, beat to help me get the net off him. Kory screamed as the net sunk farther into sections of his backit was designed to burn flesh until it had completely passed through its victim. I shook my hands to rid myself of the wad of net I held and reached for the part that was burning Kory so badly. Lexsi: Who is behind the plot to kill us? What do they want? Where are they? Why me? My to-do list is overwhelming... Kordevik: How can I keep my Thifilathi in line, when it wants Lexsi now? How do I keep the werewolves, shifters, vampires and humans around me acting civil toward each other? How can I protect Lexsi and the others, when the enemy wants to destroy all of us? How did I get myself into this mess? A Demon's Work is Never Done...
