Synopsis Delaware River Scenic Byway by : Marion M. Kyde, Ph.D., Edith S. Sharp, Stephanie Fox, and Keith Strunk

The river, the road, the rails, and the ribbon of canal--these four parallel transportation arteries define the historic corridor that is the Delaware River Scenic Byway. From the French and Indian Wars and the definitive Battle of Trenton in the colony of New Jersey to the mule-drawn barges, river steamboats, and puffing steam engines of the coal-fired Industrial Revolution, this corridor supported the formation and growth of the country. From the barracks and battlefields of Trenton to the mills and farms of Prallsville and Frenchtown, the modern visitor can trace an explosion of invention and ingenuity. Delaware River Scenic Byway showcases the rich industrial, commercial, and recreational history of this landmark New Jersey roadway.

Synopsis The Old Mine Road by : Charles Gilbert Hine

The Old Mine Road, considered the first road in America designed for wheeled vehicles, was built three hundred years ago by Dutch settlers for access to the mines of the Minisink country. It began in Kingston, New York, wove through Sussex and Warren counties in New Jersey, and ended near the Delaware Water Gap. Many changes have taken place in these regions since C. G. Hine recorded his observations and printed The Old Mine Road for his friends in 1908. Bulldozers have obliterated much of what he saw as he took his readers along the length of the road, describing the natural beauty of the countryside and relating the history and legends linked with the road and the people who lived on its route. This new printing is a facsimile of the first 1908 edition. Henry Charlton Beck's introduction gives a publishing history of the book and provides a biographical sketch about Hine.

Synopsis Natural Lives, Modern Times by : Bruce Stutz

The Delaware River flows out of New York's Catskill Mountains and winds its way through woodland and rural farmland, through the great Water Gap ravine, and finally past one of the world's most industrialized riverfronts. Yet it remains one of the country's last undammed rivers, with a natural life as rich and varied as its human history. In Natural Lives, Modern Times, Bruce Stutz has written a thoroughly modern natural history, blending keen observations of the nature of the Delaware's enduring complex of river, glacial streams, marshlands, and forest with glimpses of history and folklore and with luminous portraits of those whose lives are sustained by the river. The Delaware was the waterway of the nation's first mercantile, philosophical, scientific, cultural, and industrial heartland, hosting immigrants from Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean, all looking for new lives along the ancient river. In this always entertaining and often haunting intertwining of human and natural history, Bruce Stutz discovers those who regret what has been lost and those passionate about preserving what remains. Most of all, however, he lets us see what's at stake in a wonderfully diverse world. Not since Mark Twain has anyone taken such a freewheeling river journey.
