Synopsis Defending the Old Dominion by : Stuart Lee Butler
Defending the Old Dominion describes historical events in Virginia during the War of 1812, examining how Virginia's militia was organized, supplied, and financed by the Commonwealth. The book discusses the militia's unpreparedness in training, its lack of adequate ordnance and arms, and how that affected its ability to defend the state against British incursions during the war. Political activities of the Virginia legislature and the U.S. Congress are examined with special reference to how the state financed the war and its relationship with the U.S. government. The book includes the fascinating story of nearly two thousand former slaves who fled to British ships to fight in Virginia with British forces.

Synopsis Virginia in the War of 1812 by : Christopher M. Bonin
Virginia saw significant action during the War of 1812, from the Chesapeake-Leopard Affair to the defense of Norfolk against British invaders. Many Virginians supported the struggle for independence from Great Britain--others vehemently opposed "Mr. Madison's War." A largely forgotten conflict, the war played an important role in the history of the United States. While comprehensive histories of the war are few, there is a positive lack of state-focused studies. Drawing on extensive primary and secondary sources, the author provides an in-depth portrait of the "Old Dominion" at war in the early years of the nation's history.

Synopsis The Old Dominion in the Seventeenth Century by : Warren M. Billings
Since its original publication in 1975, The Old Dominion in the Seventeenth Century has become an important teaching tool and research volume. Warren Billings brings together more than 200 period documents, organized topically, with each chapter introduced by an interpretive essay. Topics include the settlement of Jamestown, the evolution of government and the structure of society, forced labor, the economy, Indian-Anglo relations, and Bacon's Rebellion. This revised, expanded, and updated edition adds approximately 30 additional documents, extending the chronological reach to 1700. Freshly rethought chapter introductions and suggested readings incorporate the vast scholarship of the past 30 years. New illustrations of seventeenth-century artifacts and buildings enrich the texts with recent archaeological findings. With these enhancements, and a full index, students, scholars, and those interested in early Virginia will find these documents even more enlightening.

Synopsis Defend This Old Town by : Carol Kettenburg Dubbs
Defend This Old Town is a riveting war epic of local scale and human dimensions. Taking its title from the cry raised in Williamsburg as the Federal army approached in 1862, Carol Dubbs's narrative sweeps us into the lives of residents of this small historic city from the secession of Virginia in 1861 to Lee's surrender four years later. Williamsburg's Civil War ordeal has never before been told in such depth. Located midway on the only land route between Richmond and the Union-held Fort Monroe, on the tip of the Virginia Peninsula, Williamsburg hosted Confederate troops for the first year of war while defensive earthworks were built across the area. After the Battle of Williamsburg on May 5, 1862 -- a bloody clash neither side sought but each claimed as victor -- Union forces began an occupation of the town that lasted with only short interruptions until the end of the war. Those residents who had not fled remained to stubbornly defend their homes. Dubbs scripts a compelling chronicle of these events, interweaving quotes from diaries, letters, memoirs, and military memoranda to bring immediacy to her subject. Balancing the grim experiences of combat, shortages, tending the dead and wounded, the college's burning, restive servants, typhoid breakout, and isolation from the rest of the Confederacy are some lighter interludes: the Union marshal who arrived with his saddlebags packed with shoes and dresses to win the good opinion of the town's females; the first taste of freedom for blacks; and the issuance of travel passes -- including one to an especially sharp-tongued matron, with the order never to return. Maps, period photographs, order of battle, and a bibliography complete this substantial, comprehensive, and entertaining work. Defend This Old Town is certain to engage anyone who enjoys good history.

Synopsis Stories of the Old Dominion by : John Esten Cooke
Excerpt from Stories of the Old Dominion: From the Settlement to the End of the Revolution Instead of passing his time in idleness with other young men in the town of Willoughby, he went out to the woods near, and built a sott of house for himself of the boughs of trees. In this he intended to live, and as to supporting himself, -he meant to shoot deer and live on the venison. He then got together as many books as he could on war like matters, and retiring to his Bower, as he called it, set about studying them. By this means he taught him self the art of war; but as he knew that a soldier must fight with his own hands, be resolved also to learn how to use every sort of weapon. At that time men fought on horseback often, and one of the most important of their weapons was the lance. This was a long wooden affair with a sharp iron point, and soldiers held the head straight in front of them, to strike their enemies as they rode against them at full gallop. Young John Smith had a horse and lance, and he now practised to make himself skilful. This he did by Suspending a ring to the bough of a tree, after which he went off to some distance and rode at it at full gallop, pointing his lance at the ring, in order to carry it off from the bough. By repeating this over and over, he at last became expert in it, and then he knew he could strike an enemy on horseback. He also practised with his sword to make his eye keen and his wrist tough, and fired at the trees with his pistol to be come an expert marksman. By this means he grew to be a skilful soldier; and then he set out in search of advent ui'cs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
