Synopsis Deep Roots by : Avidit Acharya

"Despite dramatic social transformations in the United States during the last 150 years, the South has remained staunchly conservative. Southerners are more likely to support Republican candidates, gun rights, and the death penalty, and southern whites harbor higher levels of racial resentment than whites in other parts of the country. Why haven't these sentiments evolved or changed? Deep Roots shows that the entrenched political and racial views of contemporary white southerners are a direct consequence of the region's slaveholding history, which continues to shape economic, political, and social spheres. Today, southern whites who live in areas once reliant on slavery--compared to areas that were not--are more racially hostile and less amenable to policies that could promote black progress. Highlighting the connection between historical institutions and contemporary political attitudes, the authors explore the period following the Civil War when elite whites in former bastions of slavery had political and economic incentives to encourage the development of anti-black laws and practices. Deep Roots shows that these forces created a local political culture steeped in racial prejudice, and that these viewpoints have been passed down over generations, from parents to children and via communities, through a process called behavioral path dependence. While legislation such as the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act made huge strides in increasing economic opportunity and reducing educational disparities, southern slavery has had a profound, lasting, and self-reinforcing influence on regional and national politics that can still be felt today. A groundbreaking look at the ways institutions of the past continue to sway attitudes of the present, Deep Roots demonstrates how social beliefs persist long after the formal policies that created those beliefs have been eradicated."--Jacket.

Synopsis Dancing Deeper Still: The Practice of Contact Improvisation by : Martin Keogh

You went to your first Contact Improvisation (C.I.) class, or a friend invited you to the weekly jam, and you’re captivated. Or perhaps, you’ve been dancing and investigating for years. What’s next? What discoveries await you in your dance? In 1972, Steve Paxton convened a group of athletes and dancers to research the principles of Contact Improvisation. Since then the form has matured into a worldwide, collaborative experiment with no central control. Everyone who enters adds their findings and permutations to this inherently unfinished dance form. Dancing Deeper Still is a sourcebook of essays on Contact Improvisation, a philosophical treatise, and a handbook. This compilation of 30 years of writings is meant to accompany and support your investigation as you discover new pathways and dynamics in your dancing. It includes chapters on: Contact Improvisation in performance Boundaries and sexuality Political activism Dancing while aging Expanded teaching research notes Advanced skills Whether you are the improviser who savors the slow rivers of sensation...or who delights in spontaneous acrobatics...or any of the bountiful realms in between, this book was written for you. Synopsis Deeper Still by : Cj Rhodes

This book is a culmination of years of discernment. I grew up as Missionary Baptist in a Mississippi railroad town. After a season of adolescent agnosticism, I was radically called to salvation and later to ministry among Pentecostals whose openness to the surprising work of the Holy Spirit "sooth[ed] my doubts and calm[ed] my fears," as the Andre Crouch song "The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power" testifies. After experiencing the power of God among them, I later returned to my native black Baptist roots, now ablaze with Holy Ghost power in a way - previously deemed unavailable in the religion of my youth. This formation in both Baptist and Pentecostal settings made me feel odd and I was often called to choose a side by well-meaning saints in each denominational tribe. What follows in these pages is the way - reconciled these two ways of being Christian by placing Calvary and Pentecost in dialog.

Synopsis Deeper Still by : Janice Woodrum

In the almost unimaginably horrendous atmosphere and circumstances within the Nazi prison camps of Germany during WWII, Betsie ten Boom was known to comfort her sister, Corrie with the brief statement, there is no pit so deep that He is not deeper still. The cover of this book attempts to depict Jesus within that deep, dark place, shining forth with the glorious light of His presence and welcoming us unto Himself. Similarly, the chapters of this book are crafted to help us visualize the presence of Jesus, and to experience more clearly His comfort, encouragement and strength within the deep and dark places of our own lives. He not only meets us there; He is the pathway to bring us out of these dim places, and into the light of His fellowship with healing and renewed hope. Through a trail of vivid personal experiences, and the truth of the scriptures, I invite you to come along and find Him in that place where we all need Him most.

Deeper Still goes beyond current experience and invites teachers to write their own story, develop their own script, ride the uncatchable wave that might be called yoga, and open up creativity to the next level. Synopsis Deeper Still by : Pastor Pearl Moses

Author and pastor Pearl Moses prays that you experience ever-increasing depths of intimacy in your pursuit of the King. She hopes that your entire life may be caught up in the pursuit of His presence and your heart enraptured by His gaze. Deeper Still: Intimate Conversations with God presents a communion-with-God journal that picks up conversations with God in a similar vein to her first journal, A Heart Full of Prayers. Through musings and prayers, Moses seeks to amplify Abba Father’s call to intimacy with Himself. In processing her own heart’s responses to that call, she invites you not to shy away from transparency with God but instead to pour out your joy, passions, pain, and struggles before Him as a vital part of a deeper, closer walk with our beloved Lord and King. Here she shares prayers of thanksgiving, prayer wrestlings to hearten and help anyone struggling emotionally, prayers written during a period of hospitalisation and recuperation during several months of national lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and prayers inspired by a range of life circumstances, readings, and musings. Offered as a companion resource to A Heart Full of Prayers, this collection presents prayers for all who hunger and thirst for a deeper, closer walk with God.

Synopsis Deep Discipleship by : J.T. English

Everyone is being discipled. The question is: what is discipling us? The majority of Christians today are being discipled by popular media, flashy events, and folk theology because churches have neglected their responsibility to make disciples. But the church is not a secondary platform in the mission of God; it is the primary platform God uses to grow people into the image of Jesus. Therefore, as church leaders, it is our primary responsibility to establish environments and relationships where people can be trained, grow, and be sent as disciples. There are three indispensable elements of discipleship: Learning to participate in the biblical story (the Bible) Growing in our confession of who God is and who we are (theology) Regularly participating in private and corporate intentional action (spiritual disciplines) Deep Discipleship equips churches to reclaim the responsibility of discipling people at any point on their journey.
