Synopsis Decca Studios and Klooks Kleek by : Dick Weindling
Considerable attention has been given to the EMI Abbey Road Studios in St Johns Wood, particularly because of their association with the Beatles. In contrast, very little has been written about their great rivals Decca, who had recording studios in nearby Broadhurst Gardens, West Hampstead. This book will explore the history of Decca and specifically the Studios, where thousands of records were made between 1937 and 1980. Klooks Kleek, meanwhile, ran from 1961 to 1970 in the Railway Hotel, next door to the Decca Studios. Dick Jordan and Geoff Williams, who ran the club, share their memories here. With artists including David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones and The Moody Blues at Decca, and Ronnie Scott, The Cream, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder and Sonny Rollins at Klooks, this book records a unique musical heritage. Containing more than fifty photographs, many of which have never before appeared in print, it will delight music lovers everywhere.

Synopsis The Great British Recording Studios by : Howard Massey
(Book). The Great British Recording Studios tells the story of the iconic British facilities where many of the most important recordings of all time were made. The first comprehensive account of British recording studios ever published, it was written with the cooperation of the British APRS (Association of Professional Recording Services, headed by Sir George Martin) to document the history of the major British studios of the 1960s and 1970s and to help preserve their legacy. The book surveys the era's most significant British studios (including Abbey Road, Olympic, and Trident), with complete descriptions of each studio's physical facilities and layout, along with listings of equipment and key personnel, as well as details about its best-known technical innovations and a discography of the major recordings done there. Seamlessly interweaving narrative text with behind-the-scenes anecdotes from dozens of internationally renowned record producers and a wealth of photographs (many never published before), this book brings to life the most famous British studios and the people who created magic there. Meticulously researched and organized, The Great British Recording Studios will inform and inspire students of the recording arts, music professionals, casual music fans, and anyone interested in the acoustically pristine facilities, groundbreaking techniques, and innovative artists and technicians that have shaped the course of modern recording.

Synopsis The Bloomsbury Handbook of Rock Music Research by : Allan Moore
The Bloomsbury Handbook of Rock Music Research is the first comprehensive academic survey of the field of rock music as it stands today. More than 50 years into its life and we still ask - what is rock music, why is it studied, and how does it work, both as music and as cultural activity? This volume draws together 37 of the leading academics working on rock to provide answers to these questions and many more. The text is divided into four major sections: practice of rock (analysis, performance, and recording); theories; business of rock; and social and culture issues. Each chapter combines two approaches, providing a summary of current knowledge of the area concerned as well as the consequences of that research and suggesting profitable subsequent directions to take. This text investigates and presents the field at a level of depth worthy of something which has had such a pervasive influence on the lives of millions.

Synopsis The Marquis de Leuville by : Dick Weindling
Once called the greatest charlatan of his age, the Marquis was a fascinating Victorian 'renaissance man'. Born to an artistic family, he became a renowned poet and adventurer. A crack shot and excellent swordsman, the Marquis fought duels and has a series of high-profile love affairs. He joined Garibaldi during the unification of Italy and claimed an affair with the Queen of Naples. Louisa Tussaud (of the famous waxworks family) risked her reputation for him as they set out on an extravagant journey across Europe. In New York, he met wealthy widow and newspaper proprietor Mrs Leslie and their on-off affair lasted over twenty years. The charismatic Marquis made friends and enemies in equal measure. Accomplished orator, story teller and dandy, he cut a swathe through high society in London and New York. But his colourful life held a secret: who was the real Marquis de Leuville?

Synopsis Are You Ready? by : Alan Byrne
In The Studio With Rock Legends Thin Lizzy January 2016 sees the 30th anniversary of the death of Phil Lynott, Thin Lizzy’s charismatic frontman, who was also a much underrated songwriter. Lizzy are often thought of as a live band (and they were superb on stage), so how their albums were made is often overlooked … until now. Lizzy fan Alan Byrne rectifies the omission with this timely album-by-album account of how the records got made (or nearly didn’t in some cases!), using original interviews with many of the musicians, producers, friends and even the photographers who shot the pictures for the covers. No stone is left unturned in this exhaustive book, which will make it a must read for Lizzy’s army of fans. The book also features previously unseen photos taken by fans, which is a lovely touch. This is the first time the story has been told in this level of depth. Beginning with the eponymously titled 1971 LP, Byrne examines every album made in the Lynott era, culminating in 1983’s Thunder And Lightning. Amongst the interviewees are band members Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson and Brian Downey from the classic era. Interestingly, guitarist Snowy White has also given an interview, which is a coup as the reserved musician normally doesn’t talk about his time with this boisterous band. Whilst this is a serious study of Lizzy’s output, Byrne inevitably has to include some of the wilder stories, which give an insight into what life was like in a band that breakfasted on excess. It also charts Lizzy’s rise from struggling wannabes to rock superstars with multi-platinum albums under their belts. It is also the story of an innovative legacy that still reverberates today, 30 years after Phil Lynott’s passing. The music he helped to pioneer influences musicians today and each new generation brings more fans who fall under the spell of one of rock’s greatest ever bands.

‘... an instant classic and a required part of the library of anyone fascinated with the record business.’ – Danny Goldberg, bestselling author of Serving the Servant: Remembering Kurt Cobain Chess Records tested their acquisitions out on people waiting at a nearby bus stop: if the crowd were bopping, they had a hit. Sub Pop rejection letters start with the harsh, yet funny, ‘Dear Loser’. Atlantic Records signed Led Zeppelin on Dusty Springfield’s recommendation. Labelled with Love is an odyssey through your record collection and the world beyond it, from the Jazz Age to punk, the civil rights movement to Thatcherism, the Beatles to Britpop, and Ella Fitzgerald to The Ramones. Long-time music obsessive Andy Bollen tracks popular music through the influential labels that have shaped the last eighty years, chronicling each company with the passion of a fan but the eye of a satirist. This is an informative and revealing look at the leading labels, bands and music that rocked our worlds and shaped our lives.

Synopsis Sixties British Pop, Outside in by : Gordon Thompson
Itchycoo Park, 1964-1970--the second volume of Sixties British Pop, Outside In--explores how London songwriters, musicians, and production crews navigated the era's cultural upheavals by reimagining the pop-music envelope. Thompson explores how some British artists conjured up sophisticated hybrid forms by recombining elements of jazz, folk, blues, Indian ragas, and western classical music while others returned to the raw essentials. Encouraging these experiments, youth culture's economic power challenged the authority of their parents' generation. Based on extensive research, including vintage and original interviews, Thompson presents sixties British pop, not as lists of discrete people and events, but as an interwoven story.

Synopsis Rock 'n' Roll London by : Max Wooldridge
London's rock 'n' roll history is in many ways the world's rock 'n' roll history. It has given birth to some of the most influential rock bands ever -- The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Elton John, The Sex Pistols -- and many popular movements -- psychedelia, mod, punk, ska, and Brit-pop. This meticulously researched and entertaining guide explores London's long and occasionally sordid rock history from the 1950s to the present day, providing the casual traveler with a neighborhood-by-neighborhood look at the venues, clubs, pubs, people, studios, stores, and events that rocked the world. Where was David Bowie brought up? Where did the Beatles play their last gig? Where did Keith Moon spend his last night? Each chapter/neighborhood is accompanied by locator maps and detailed street directions, and is filled to the brim with stunning photographs, ephemera, and rock trivia.
