Synopsis Dancing with the Devil in the City of God by : Juliana Barbassa

From prizewinning journalist and Brazilian native Juliana Barbassa comes a deeply reported and beautifully written account of the seductive and chaotic city of Rio de Janeiro as it struggles with poverty and corruption on the brink of the 2016 Olympic Games. Juliana Barbassa moved a great deal throughout her life, but Rio was always home. After twenty-one years abroad, she returned to find her native city—once ravaged by inflation, drug wars, corrupt leaders, and dying neighborhoods—undergoing a major change. Rio has always aspired to the pantheon of global capitals, and under the spotlight of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games it seems that its moment has come. But in order to prepare itself for the world stage, Rio must vanquish the entrenched problems that Barbassa recalls from her childhood. Turning this beautiful but deeply flawed place into a pristine showcase of the best that Brazil has to offer in just a few years is a tall order—and with the whole world watching, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Library Journal called Dancing with the Devil in the City of God “akin to Charlie LeDuff’s Detroit”—a book that “combines history and personal interviews in an informative and engaging work.” This kaleidoscopic portrait of Rio introduces the reader to the people who make up this city of extremes, revealing their aspirations and their grit, their violence, their hungers, and their splendor, and shedding light on the future of this city they are building together. Dancing with the Devil in the City of God is an insider perspective from a native daughter and “a fascinating look at the people who live in and aspire to change one of the world’s most impressive cities” (Booklist, starred review).

Synopsis Circus Maximus by : Andrew Zimbalist

An updated and expanded analysis of the economic tensions behind the Olympics and the World Cup games. Andrew Zimbalist looks beyond the headlines of two of the world’s most beloved sporting events: the Olympics and the World Cup. In the updated and expanded edition of his bestselling book, Circus Maximus: The Economic Gamble Behind Hosting the Olympics and the World Cup, Zimbalist tackles the bogus claim that cities chosen to host these high-profile sporting events experience an economic windfall. In this new edition he takes aim at the outrageous FIFA scandal, Boston’s bid for the 2024 summer Olympics, and the criticism surrounding the 2015 Women's World Cup. Circus Maximus focuses on major cities, like London and Barcelona, that have previously hosted these sporting events, to provide context for cities like Tokyo and Rio de Janerio, which are currently bearing the weight of exploding expenses, corruption, and protests. Zimbalist offers a sobering and candid look at the Olympics and the World Cup from outside the echo chamber.

Synopsis Dancing With The Devil by : Kathleen Dryden

Dancing With The Devil is about the evil strategies Satan uses to capture the soul of a Christian and how his destructiveness infiltrates the government of a Christian nation. When we let this enemy inside the temple of the Lord, (our heart and mind) and into our government entities we will begin to live a life of deep sorrow and regret. However, regardless of his strategies he cannot enter those places where he doesn’t belong unless we give him access through the choices we make that reject Christ’s statutes. To dance with the devil is to ignore scriptural wisdom, willingly trading biblical truth for personal lust and power while still claiming to be a Christian, attending church, and influencing others, especially tender hearts and innocent minds. It is to flirt with an evil attitude, and/or participate in evil behavior. Through my own personal experiences, as well as those shared by close friends and family, I have come to realize how the sinful choices each of us makes contributes to our own demise and to the brokenness in our families, which leads to a spiritually and physically broken nation. Every Christian must choose to help reduce evil, bring justice to the innocent, and help turn people to Christ by using wisdom and understanding to make good choices. Dancing With The Devil teaches Christians why it is important to let the Lord open the eyes of our heart so we can understand how that living in disobedience to His Word jeopardizes our soul and creates a world of evil—evil that begins with the smallest intent of the heart and mind, ends with the most wicked action, and sets up our people and our nation for failure. While we will never eradicate all the evil in the world, we must believe that it exists and accurately define it. Then we can judge and punish it, taking warlike action against it when necessary, minimizing its affect on humanity. Those whose goal is eternity in heaven with Jesus must understand His character and His commands. To live a life that contradicts His character and commands is to dance with the devil and endorse evil. When we discover that we are caught in this bondage we must repent; to repent is to stop, then turn around, and return to Jesus with all our heart, letting Him redeem us. When we renew our minds to conform to Jesus and His statutes, and change our behavior then the Lord will hear our prayer and will heal our land.

Synopsis Dancing with the Devil by : Norina D'Aloiso Owens

Norina D'Aloiso Owens is the founder of Women of Faith International, Inc., with branches in California, Pennsylvania, and Kenya, East Africa. She is the daughter of an Italian immigrant father and an Italian American mother, both of whose ties stem back to the province of Isernia in Italy's Molise region. Her father, Domenico D'Aloiso, broke tradition and became an evangelist and pastor of a nondenominational Pentecostal church in her hometown of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. After an unhappy childhood and two disastrous marriages, Norina turned from God. Although a Christian who loved Jesus, she flirted with the occult, but to her physical and mental detriment. Her path back to Him was fraught with numerous serious medical challenges. Now entering her nineties, she remains very active, crisscrossing the country regularly and sharing her faith. Norina was ordained in 1985 by the Independent Assemblies of God in Laguna Hills, California, and is a graduate of the International School of Ministry. She holds an honorary doctorate degree from Endtime Ministries International Bible University in California.
