Accordingly, church membership with its almost infinite opportunities for personal participation is not in any sense comparable to the sporadic efforts of isolated believers. Opportunities for organized and intelli gent effort are equally as necessary to the believer in God as they are to the student of medicine, or law, or engineering. A civilized country could: dispense with its schools as readily as with its churches. In this connection I am not forgetting that occasionally self - made men equal or even excel those who have attended college, likewise, that believing non churchmen occasionally reach a degree of efficiency not possessed by the average churchman, but in both cases these are exceptions.
