Primary and secondary source documents discuss the evolution of climate change, effects of global warming, how global warming may alter agriculture and industry, the role of governments in preventing climate change.

Agrarian transformations within and across countries have been significantly and dynamically altered during the past few decades compared to previous eras, provoking a variety of reactions from rural poor communities worldwide. The recent convergence of various crises – financial, food, energy and environmental – has put the nexus between ‘rural development’ and ‘development in general’ back onto the center stage of theoretical, policy and political agendas in the world today. Confronting these issues will require (re)engaging with critical theories, taking politics seriously, and utilizing rigorous and appropriate research methodologies. These are the common messages and implications of the various contributions to this collection in the context of a scholarship that is critical in two senses: questioning prescriptions from mainstream perspectives and interrogating popular conventions in radical thinking. This book focuses on key perspectives, frameworks and methodologies in agrarian change and peasant studies. The contributors are leading scholars in the field of rural development studies: Henry Bernstein, Terence J. Byres, Saturnino M. Borras Jr, Marc Edelman, Cristóbal Kay, Benedict Kerkvliet, Philip McMichael, Shahra Razavi, Ian Scoones and Teodor Shanin. This book was previously published as a special issue of the Journal of Peasant Studies.

This book offers critical perspectives on global literacies, connecting research, theory, and practice. An emerging concept in the literacy field, many scholars agree on the need for students to develop global literacies, yet few agree on a widely accepted definition. Based on a synthesis of the literature, the editors formulate a definition of global literacies with four dimensions, including: literacy as a human right in all nations around the world; critical reading and creation of multimodal texts about global issues; intercultural communication and reciprocal collaboration with globally diverse others; and transformative action for social and environmental justice that traverses borders. Taking this shared, proposed definition as a starting point, the chapters then offer contextualized examples of global literacies from K-12 and teacher education classrooms to make explicit links between research and practice. The contributors interact with and interrogate the book’s definition of global literacies using a common framework of critical theory. As such, this book provides both emerging and established scholars with critical frameworks for positioning global literacies in ways that are relevant, dynamic, and forward thinking.

Since the late 1980s, critical geopolitics has gone from being a radical critical perspective on the disciplines of political geography and international relations theory to becoming a recognised area of research in its own right. Influenced by poststructuralist concerns with the politics of representation, critical geopolitics considers the ways in which the use of particular discourses shape political practices. Initially critical geopolitics analysed the practical geopolitical language of the elites and intellectuals of statecraft. Subsequent iterations have considered the role that popular representations of the international political world play. As critical geopolitics has become a more established part of political geography it has attracted ever more critique: from feminists for its apparent blindness to the embodied effects of geopolitical praxis and from those who have been uncomfortable about its textual focus, while others have challenged critical geopolitics to address alternative, resistant forms of geopolitical practice. Again, critical geopolitics has been reworked to incorporate these challenges and the latest iterations have encompassed normative agendas, non-representational theory, emotional geographies and affect. It is against the vibrant backdrop of this intellectual development of critical geopolitics as a subdiscipline that this Companion is set. Bringing together leading researchers associated with the different forms of critical geopolitics, this volume produces an overview of its achievements, limitations, and areas of new and potential future development. The Companion is designed to serve as a key resource for an interdisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners interested in the spatiality of politics.

Gender mainstreaming (GM) has been identified in academic literature as a crucial topic for both public attention and academic research. This is because GM is currently considered an essential strategy for achieving the highly sought-after outcome of gender equality in public organisations. However, an exhaustive degree of academic, practitioner and advocate attention has been paid to challenges observed in the GM process. Specifically, concerns have crystallised on the following twin “puzzles”: (i) conceptual confusion and (ii) the challenges of operationalising the process. The central purpose of this book has been to make a contribution in relation to both of these academic and practice-based issues at a time when questions appertaining to gender equality are reaching critical mass. Moreover, we are simply not there yet in terms of our aspirations for gender equality in public organisations and new insights on strategies used to move us forward need to be brought to the foreground to engender progress. To address the aims of the book, the author uses three novel argumentative-turns to interrogate the politics of mainstreaming from a critical perspective. First is the challenge related to conceptual confusion. It is important to clarify that this book does not intend to investigate and define the issue of gender inequality in organisations per se, something that is beyond the scope of this book and deserves attention in its own right. Instead, this work focuses on the specific processes of change (mainstreaming) rather than the content of change (gender). Secondly, the practice element was also approached in a inimitable way by concentrating on local government in the UK which has had a long history with GM, despite the dearth of books on the issue, and thus an opportunity to analyse instructive and empirically rich cases. Finally, through a longitudinal view of local government history, this has included previously excluded evidence for consideration. Using these argumentative-turns, the book has met its three aims by mapping out: (i) the core conceptual features of mainstreaming across a range of organisational settings; (ii) developed an evaluation framework for understanding the outcomes of GM through a national level review and primary research; and (iii) interrogated the findings through a productive theory–practice dialogue using the work of social learning theory. This book should be of interest to a wide-ranging audience. As the study at the broadest level is essentially a study into the politics of change over time, students and academics may wish to utilise the books findings as they point to some of the challenges and difficulties associated with analysis of change within organisations. Feminists should also find the theoretical and methodological approach of interest in the sense that it challenges conventional wisdom and provides novel argumentative turns. Historical specialist may also find this book of interest for those concerned with process tracing methods and diachronic analysis. Finally, practitioners involved in different forms of mainstreaming/organisational change and development should be interested in the experiences encountered by the local government officers in adopting and implementing GM in the case studies. These include, but are and not limited, to Program Management Specialists, Development Officers, Policy Experts, Equality Practitioners and Gender Experts in a variety of organisational contexts from the local to the supranational levels, private, public and mixed economy sectors.

Sustainability is a concept that unifies the environment, economy, and society, and has spread as a key concept in enterprise management. The United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, which require worldwide efforts to reach a sustainable society, and also applies to private enterprises.Sustainability should be developed in connection with management strategy, and Asia's role, including that of Japan, is important to improve global sustainability. This book addresses how sustainability management in the Asian context is currently practised and proposes practices for the future.Investigation of the effect of business domain characteristics on the integration of sustainability and management, and elucidation of the process and features of EMCS (Environmental Management Control System) inside and outside of companies have been indicated. The book points that companies need to use and design Sustainability Management Control Systems in order to implement a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) strategy and match employees' behavior to CSR activities.MFCA (Material Flow Cost Accounting) has started to expand rapidly into other Asian industries from Japan as a method of Environmental Management Control. The fundamental idea and procedure of MFCA and many case examples of Japanese MFCA have been reported. These findings help us to consider a policy for continuous use of MFCA. Moreover, the relationship between Toyota Production System and MFCA has been explained and 'Material Flow Time Costing' as a new management accounting concept is proposed.Based on the literature review, the study has made recommendations for Asian companies' strategic management and governmental policy-making to improve both quality and quantity of sustainability disclosure in Asia. One of the papers has identified the development and implementation of social and environmental accounting by Indonesian state-owned enterprises and their determining factors. In a Japanese manufacture, the effect of smoothed production has been analyzed as an example of environmental management. This led to an increase in production quality without additional capital spending.
