Synopsis Crisis of the Cities (Classic Reprint) by : Frederick K. Huntington-Vigman

Excerpt from Crisis of the Cities The many entries under the caption City Administration stressed problem of, reform of, evils of, our failures in and the like. Concerted attack on municipal corruption had not yet reached its crest, but it was gathering momentum. Equally extensive were the entries under the heading, Housing of the Working Classes and of the Poor in Cities and the section on water supply and sanitation was surprisingly long. On the other hand there were comparatively few entries for public works and home rule; the only item on city plan ning was Planning the Site for a City, a technical study by Lewis M. Haupt in Engineering Magazine for 1895. Three years later Brooks prepared, with the help of Dr. Milo R. Maltbie, A Bibliography of Municipal Problems and City Conditions, complete to 1901. Explaining the need for the work, Brooks wrote since the publication of the first edition of this work in 1897, the literature on cities has grown so rapidly that from three to four times as much space is now required to list it adequately. References to European cities reflected growing interest in comparative studies. The project, Sponsored by the Reform Club, was suspended when the re form movement receded, following on a number of victories for mea sures it had sponsored. In this interim the most intensive studies of municipal affairs shifted to such universities as maintained chairs in municipal government and political science. Synopsis The Crisis by : J. Wayne Laurens

Excerpt from The Crisis: Or the Enemies of America Unmasked The most remarkable of all the circumstances, which distinguish our own country from others, is its rapid growth. In the begining of the seventeenth century it was a wilderness, inhabited only by savages and wild beasts. In the middle of the nineteenth, it rivals the oldest and proudest nations of the world in population, wealth, intelligence and industry. When the territory of the United States was first trodden by the settlers of Virginia, England, France and Germany could boast centuries upon centuries of cultivation, with some little knowledge of civil and religious freedom. Since that period America has shown the birth, childhood, youth and manhood of a model republic, which Europe has repeatedly but vainly endeavored to copy. All this implies rapid progress. Synopsis The New Urban Crisis by : Richard Florida

Richard Florida, one of the world's leading urbanists and author of The Rise of the Creative Class, confronts the dark side of the back-to-the-city movement In recent years, the young, educated, and affluent have surged back into cities, reversing decades of suburban flight and urban decline. and yet all is not well. In The New Urban Crisis, Richard Florida, one of the first scholars to anticipate this back-to-the-city movement, demonstrates how the forces that drive urban growth also generate cities' vexing challenges, such as gentrification, segregation, and inequality. Meanwhile, many more cities still stagnate, and middle-class neighborhoods everywhere are disappearing. We must rebuild cities and suburbs by empowering them to address their challenges. The New Urban Crisis is a bracingly original work of research and analysis that offers a compelling diagnosis of our economic ills and a bold prescription for more inclusive cities capable of ensuring prosperity for all.

Synopsis Rome in Crisis by : Plutarch

Bringing together nine biographies from Plutarch's Parallel Lives series, this edition examines the lives of major figures in Roman history, from Lucullus (118-57 BC), an aristocratic politician and conqueror of Eastern kingdoms, to Otho (32-69 AD), a reckless young noble who consorted with the tyrannical, debauched emperor Nero before briefly becoming a dignified and gracious emperor himself. Ian Scott-Kilvert's and Christopher Pelling's translations are accompanied by a new introduction, and also includes a separate introduction for each biography, comparative essays of the major figures, suggested further reading, notes and maps.

Excerpt from The Crisis of Morals Can be brought equally against the United States of America, some of the Dominions, and, in Europe, with unquestionable jus tice, against the great cities of Germany. So far as I am able to judge from recent reports, a similar indictment might be brought against France and Italy. Synopsis Out of the Crisis, reissue by : W. Edwards Deming

The classic and deeply influential work on business management, leadership, problem solving, and quality control—based on Denning’s famous 14 Points for Management. Now reissued for the managers and leaders of today! Translated into 12 languages and continuously in print since its original publication in 1982, this highly influential framework presents the foundations for a completely transformational way to lead and manage people, processes, and resources. According to Deming, American company management’s failure to plan for the future brings about loss of market, which brings about loss of jobs. Management must be judged not only by the quarterly dividend, but by innovative plans to: • Stay in business • Protect investment • Ensure future dividends • Provide more jobs through improved product and service In simple, direct language, Deming explains the principles of management transformation and how to apply them. This edition includes a foreword by Deming’s grandson, Kevin Edwards Cahill, and Kelly Allan, business consultant and Deming expert.

Synopsis The New Urban Crisis by : Richard Florida

In recent years, the young, educated, and affluent have surged back into cities, reversing decades of suburban flight and urban decline. And yet all is not well, Richard Florida argues in The New Urban Crisis. Florida, one of the first scholars to anticipate this back-to-the-city movement in his groundbreaking The Rise of the Creative Class, demonstrates how the same forces that power the growth of the world's superstar cities also generate their vexing challenges: gentrification, unaffordability, segregation, and inequality. Meanwhile, many more cities still stagnate, and middle-class neighborhoods everywhere are disappearing. Our winner-take-all cities are just one manifestation of a profound crisis in today's urbanized knowledge economy. A bracingly original work of research and analysis, The New Urban Crisis offers a compelling diagnosis of our economic ills and a bold prescription for more inclusive cities capable of ensuring growth and prosperity for all.
