It was a bit dark yet fun at the same time ... It made me laugh and had a few surprises. 5 ★'s - Great book! Fun read! Well-developed story line and characters. It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. The world building is detailed and imaginative. Dark fantasy but humorous at times. Great read!

Synopsis The Collected Crime Novels Volume One by : Clare Francis
A “tour-de-force” espionage thriller and the New York Times–bestselling debut novel from an international bestselling master of suspense (Chicago Tribune). Bestselling British novelist Clare Francis has proven again and again that she “has serious crime writing talent” (The Mail on Sunday). Collected here: a Cold War spy thriller and her debut—a military thriller set in World War II, both a New York Times and international bestseller. Wolf Winter: In this “classically structured spy thriller,” two Norwegians are murdered in the Soviet wilderness (The New York Times). On a seemingly routine intelligence operation, Jan Johansen and his companion head to Finland, but when they wander over the Russian border, they are gunned down in cold blood. Halvard Starheim, an experienced explorer and Jan’s friend, is determined to find out what went wrong. Halvard is joined by Jan’s beautiful widow and a journalist who is hiding his own dangerous secret. Their journey will slowly uncover an international conspiracy—and lead to a terrifying showdown in the freezing Arctic winter. “Stephen King horror and Ingmar Bergman darkness . . . A galloping good read.” —The Washington Post Book World Night Sky: Three lives, caught in the turbulence of World War II, converge one fateful night on the same beach. Julie Lescaux, a young English mother, has moved to France and become perilously involved in the French Resistance. David Freyman, a German-Jewish scientist, has made a discovery that could free war-torn Europe. But Nazi spies threaten at every turn, including Paul Vasson, a former-pimp-turned-collaborator, in this “thoroughly professional wartime adventure” (The Sunday Times). “A terrific thriller.” —Time Out London

Synopsis Allegiance by : Beth Bernobich
King Leos of Károví, the tyrannical despot whose magic made him near immortal and who controlled a tattered empire for centuries through fear and intimidation, is finally dead. Ilse Zhalina watched as the magical jewels that gave him such power reunited into a single essence, a manifestly God-like creature who then disappeared into the cosmic void. Ilse is now free to fulfill her promise to Valara Baussay, the rogue Queen of Morennioù, who wants to return to her kingdom and claim her throne. Ilse will do all in her power to help Valara if only as a means to get to her home. Home to her lover, Raul Kosenmark, who is gathering forces in their homeland of Veraene now that Leos is dead in order to save them from an ill-advised war. Pulled by duty and honor, Ilse makes this long journey back to where her story began, to complete the journey she attempted lives and centuries before and bring peace between the kingdoms. Along the way she learns some hard truths and finally comes to a crossroads of power and magic. She must decide if duty is stronger than a love that she has sought through countless lifetimes. Will Isle give up her heart's desire so that her nation can finally know lasting peace? Allegiance is the thrilling conclusion to Beth Bernobich's River of Souls trilogy.

Synopsis Time on Target by : William R. Buster
A vivid recounting of WWII combat by a highly decorated soldier: “Few can match Buster in the description of his personal wartime actions and impressions.” —Filson Club History Quarterly He graduated from West Point in 1939, just in time to serve through one of the most crucial periods in national and world history. William R. Buster, born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, knew a soldier’s combat experience—and left a firsthand account of it. His story tells of the incredible expansion, arming, and training of the US Army, as well as his experience in the great conflict itself, from North Africa and Sicily to the hedgerow country of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and on to Berlin. For his service, he received the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, and the French Croix de Guerre. Includes photographs “To my mind, this memoir rings as true as steel. Any combat soldier will recognize episodes and experiences recounted here . . . Anyone possessing a grain of empathy with the human being caught in the toils of war will find the story interesting in detail and moving in emotional effect.” —Charles P. Roland, Emeritus Professor of History, University of Kentucky
