Synopsis A History of Coventry, Orleans County, Vermont (Classic Reprint) by : Pliny Holton White

Excerpt from A History of Coventry, Orleans County, Vermont Introduction. Charter. Boundaries. Speculation in lands. Elias Buel, the principal grantee. First settlement. The Cobbs. Feats of strength. Hard-o ships of the settlers. Until the very last year of the eighteenth century, the town ship of Coventry was uninhabited by civilized man. An nu broken forest, luxuriant with the growth of centuries, crowned its hill-tops; swamps, black and noisome, occupied its vallies; and no foot-fall disturbed its solitudes, save that of the wild beast, or of the wandering Indian. The lapse of sixty years has changed the whole aspect of nature. Where dense woods once shadowed a luxuriant but useless soil, the hand of industry has made broad clearings, where abundant harvests annually repay the labors of the husbandman; instead of the rank and gloomy verdure of the swamp are green and fertile meadows; and instead of the cry of wild beasts or the whoop of Indians are heard the cheery voices of honest toil, the laugh of. Happy children at their play, the morning prayer, and the evening hymn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Legendary Locals of Coventry by : Andrew D. Boisvert

Coventry was originally part of the Shawomet Purchase deeded to Samuel Gorton. People like Francis Brayton and Joseph Bucklin petitioned the Rhode Island General Assembly to form the new town. During the Industrial Revolution, John Jenckes Kilton and Searles Capwell played roles in the development of mills and businesses. Today, Coventry boasts many second-generation businesses including Crystal Cleansers, owned by William Marcotte, and Maguire Lace & Warping, run by James Maguire alongside his father, Joseph Maguire. Coventry is home to several independently operated businesses as well, such as All Booked Up, owned by Deana Borges, and Summit General Store, owned by the Skaling family. Educators such as Peter Stetson and Julie Lima Boyle followed in the footsteps of Carrie Ina Shippee and Mary Harvey. Many of Coventry's men and women have answered the call to serve their country, including George Potter and Mary Agnes Delehantey. Not many towns can claim as their own a swimmer of the English Channel, a girl who was an ambassador to Alaska, and a recipient of a Field & Stream award.
