Synopsis County and Township Government in the United States (Classic Reprint) by : Kirk H. Porter

Excerpt from County and Township Government in the United States This book is intended to describe county and township government in the United States. In addition to this description there is developed throughout the volume a consistent plan for the reorganization of county government which is summarized in chapter fifteen. It is hoped the book, will be considered suitable for use in colleges and universities as the basis for a course of study in county and township government. For one reason or another this field has been neglected in the class room. And yet the average citizen comes in contact with offices and institutions of local government much more frequently than he does with the, organs of state and national government. It is hoped therefore that this volume will stimulate teachers of political science to offer courses on local government in those institutions where it has been neglected, and serve as an aid to those who are already teaching courses in this subject. Variations in type were found to be so numerous as almost to discourage any effort to continue with the work. It seems as if for every definite statement concerning an office or institution of local government forty-seven qualifying comments must be added. Yet out of all these variations it has been possible to pick certain very essential facts about local government in general; and the purpose has been to present them without undue confusion. Synopsis County and Town Government in Illinois (Classic Reprint) by : John Archibald Fairlie

Excerpt from County and Town Government in Illinois During the various stages of territorial government in Illinois local officials were appointed by the territorial authorities, and judicial and administrative functions were concentrated in the same hands. In these respects the local institutions followed the systems of Virginia and Kentucky. Provision was, however, made from the organization of the Northwest Territory for both county and township officials, the latter showing the influence of the Mid dle Atlantic States. Synopsis A General Outline of Civil Government by : Clinton D. Higby

Excerpt from A General Outline of Civil Government: In the United States, the States, Counties, Townships, Cities, and Towns There are many good text-books on the subject which require from two to three terms to complete; but the press of other important studies is so great that it is better to have a treatise which may be completed in a single term with perhaps but two recitations a week. In making a book of this kind, the purpose has been to secure the greatest brevity with the least loss of the qualities of a good text-book. Much of the comment on different institutions is left to the teacher, who will know best how to economize time as the case of his class requires. The frequent mention of books for a further study of the subject will be of help to teachers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Civil Government of the State of Indiana and the United States by : H. P. Leavenworth

Excerpt from Civil Government of the State of Indiana and the United States: A Text-Book for Schools It has been the aim of the author of this little book to present, in as brief and comprehensive a manner 30 possible, a statement of the principles of the govern ment under which we live, and its workings in city, township, county, state and nation. In preparing a work of this character, much which would be of interest must necessarily be omitted. It is hoped, however, that enough is given to enable the average school-boy or school-girl to have a clear idea of how our government is carried on in its various departments.
