Synopsis Benchmarking Library, Information and Education Services by : David Baker
Benchmarking Library, Information and Education Services: New Strategic Choices in Challenging Times provides the foundations of ongoing research in the development of collections and services. The book contributes to practical outputs of general benefit to the sector, including customers, clients or stakeholders, offering ideas for how to identify comparative strengths and weaknesses and improve or enhance present practices regardless of how well institutions currently perform. The centerpiece of the book is a description, report and analysis of a major international QB exercise that culminates in a set of good practice statements. The benefits of the QB methodology are applicable to individual institutions. Because of the current global turbulence, individuals, leaders and whole institutions are keen to learn more about what is happening and how they can develop sustainable solutions to both immediate challenges and longer-term scenarios. These include an analysis of third sector organizations, e-libraries, marketing information services, vocational training in higher education, the creative arts, and the role of partnerships in organizational openness. - Discusses qualitative benchmarking and it's core tenets - Helps readers understand the experiences of others and compare their own experiences to learn and adapt practices - Presents tactics readers can use to identify their organization's professional identity, value and purpose - Provides an idea of what the future state of library, education and public services will look like

Synopsis Performance Evaluation and Benchmarking by : Raghunath Nambiar
First established in August 1988, the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) has shaped the landscape of modern transaction processing and database benchmarks over two decades. Now, the world is in the midst of an extraordinary information explosion led by rapid growth in the use of the Internet and connected devices. Both user-generated data and enterprise data levels continue to grow ex- nentially. With substantial technological breakthroughs, Moore's law will continue for at least a decade, and the data storage capacities and data transfer speeds will continue to increase exponentially. These have challenged industry experts and researchers to develop innovative techniques to evaluate and benchmark both hardware and software technologies. As a result, the TPC held its First Conference on Performance Evaluation and Benchmarking (TPCTC 2009) on August 24 in Lyon, France in conjunction with the 35th International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB 2009). TPCTC 2009 provided industry experts and researchers with a forum to present and debate novel ideas and methodologies in performance evaluation, measurement and characteri- tion for 2010 and beyond. This book contains the proceedings of this conference, including 16 papers and keynote papers from Michael Stonebraker and Karl Huppler.

Synopsis Benchmarking in Food and Farming by : Dr Lisa Jack
At a time when food producers have to make significant changes to their businesses in order to survive, a review of benchmarking in agriculture and discussion of its future potential is critical. This book meets that need by providing an overview of existing benchmarking practices in agriculture and the food supply chain, and evaluating the potential of these practices to drive sustainable innovation in food and farming. Increasing pressures from commodity markets, corporate buyers, government and rising input prices (particularly fuel prices) are creating an environment in which farmers and their advisors are keen to make greater use of performance information for survival and growth. Where farmers are diversifying into alternative production methods, non-agricultural enterprises and on-farm production and sales, the greater the interest in a wider range of accounting tools for decision making. Lisa Jack and her contributors draw on a wide range of data and sources from Australia, New Zealand, the USA, the UK and Europe to provide critical evaluations of what might be considered 'state of the art' benchmarking practices at this time, including recent strategic developments such as the use of non-financial measures in balanced scorecards. The food and farming industry is unusual in that benchmarking takes place among large numbers of small, family-owned businesses working in a global industry. Not only, therefore, is this book important for those working in food supply chain businesses, but also for those involved in the general practice of benchmarking.
