Synopsis Core Capabilities for Industry 4.0 by : Arthur Cropley

With Industry 4.0, the demands on engineers are changing: new opportunities arising from developments in artificial intelligence require not only lifelong learning but also a high degree of creativity. The authors provide new impulses for the design of an Industry 4.0-oriented engineering education that promotes the growth of competencies for the working world of tomorrow. Building on basic information on Industry 4.0, concepts from areas such as problem solving, knowledge management, lifelong learning and creativity research are presented and their usefulness for future-oriented engineering education reviewed. Synopsis The Fourth Industrial Revolution by : Klaus Schwab

World-renowned economist Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, explains that we have an opportunity to shape the fourth industrial revolution, which will fundamentally alter how we live and work. Schwab argues that this revolution is different in scale, scope and complexity from any that have come before. Characterized by a range of new technologies that are fusing the physical, digital and biological worlds, the developments are affecting all disciplines, economies, industries and governments, and even challenging ideas about what it means to be human. Artificial intelligence is already all around us, from supercomputers, drones and virtual assistants to 3D printing, DNA sequencing, smart thermostats, wearable sensors and microchips smaller than a grain of sand. But this is just the beginning: nanomaterials 200 times stronger than steel and a million times thinner than a strand of hair and the first transplant of a 3D printed liver are already in development. Imagine “smart factories” in which global systems of manufacturing are coordinated virtually, or implantable mobile phones made of biosynthetic materials. The fourth industrial revolution, says Schwab, is more significant, and its ramifications more profound, than in any prior period of human history. He outlines the key technologies driving this revolution and discusses the major impacts expected on government, business, civil society and individuals. Schwab also offers bold ideas on how to harness these changes and shape a better future—one in which technology empowers people rather than replaces them; progress serves society rather than disrupts it; and in which innovators respect moral and ethical boundaries rather than cross them. We all have the opportunity to contribute to developing new frameworks that advance progress.

Synopsis EVALUATING THE ROLE OF CORE COMPETENCIES IN IMPROVING PERFORMANCE OF MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES by : Harleen Kaur

Companies are involved in a continuous process of change in order to renew capabilities and achieve a competitive advantage in a hyper competitive setting. The key, then, is to own and nurture the resources and competencies that make up the essence of the business. This work discusses the impact of core competences on organizational performance as a critical issue in manufacturing sector This paper proposes model for creating competitive advantage through core competence. The approach is used by reviewing some concept about core competence. An organizer questionnaire was developed ,through which data of 59 manufacturing organizations was collected. A range of methods were used to analyses statistical data, and the results were extracted using SPSS. The result’s of correlation analysis, shows that there is a significant correlation among core competences and organizational performance.Using regression analysis, core competencies were shortlisted. Based on this, we recommend that manufacturing organizations should develop of their core competences as a strategic tool to enhance organizational performance

Synopsis Implementing Industry 4.0 by : Carlos Toro

This book relates research being implemented in three main research areas: secure connectivity and intelligent systems, real-time analytics and manufacturing knowledge and virtual manufacturing. Manufacturing SMEs and MNCs want to see how Industry 4.0 is implemented. On the other hand, groundbreaking research on this topic is constantly growing. For the aforesaid reason, the Singapore Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), has created the model factory initiative. In the model factory, manufacturers, technology providers and the broader industry can (i) learn how I4.0 technologies are implemented on real-world manufacturing use-cases, (ii) test process improvements enabled by such technologies at the model factory facility, without disrupting their own operations, (iii) co-develop technology solutions and (iv) support the adoption of solutions at their everyday industrial operation. The book constitutes a clear base ground not only for inspiration of researchers, but also for companies who will want to adopt smart manufacturing approaches coming from Industry 4.0 in their pathway to digitization.

Synopsis Strategic Management and Core Competencies by : Anders Drejer

Managers and management scholars alike need operational models and concepts for dealing with core competencies within strategic management. This book provides tools for the practitioner as well as fundamental theoretical concepts to enable scholars to further build upon Drejer's work. His main argument is that understanding core competencies is key to explaining why some firms enjoy a competitive advantage over others. Drejer proposes models and means with which managers can proactively identify, design, and develop their firm's core competencies in strategic alignment. More than merely a how-to book, this work places an equal emphasis on the concepts behind competence-based strategy. The author offers the reader multiple perspectives on the background of competence-based strategy, the relationship between strategic management and the development of core competencies, and the application of competence-based strategy to praxis. He provides the tools necessary to identify, analyze, and develop the competencies of a firm, and in so doing performs a valuable service for practitioners and researchers.
