This collection of essays highlights current debates for cities undergoing urban renewal, focussing on regional cities as places that lead change. Like many regional cities, Geelong is grappling with the legacy of its industrial architectural heritage and identity. This in-depth study of the city of Geelong examines theories and realities - from the speculative to the mundane - critical to change pre-empted by deindustrialisation. While this book argues that architecture and the built environment are key to urban renewal, an intersectional perspective on Geelong as a place raises contested pasts and territories. This brings attention to the dispossession of First Nations people by British colonisers, as well as the exploitation of immigrant communities in industrial production. Informed by positions on design futures, decolonising and cultural urbanisms, adaptive re-use and the post-industrial city, the chapters in this book expand an interdisciplinary field relevant to scholars and practitioners in heritage and conservation, urban design, community engagement and place-making more generally.

Australia's 'gateway cities' occupy a significant place within the economy, even given the prominence of the capital cities of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. However, they have been underestimated in terms of public policy. Current debates on fiscal rebalancing need to recognise the latent economic potential of these gateway cities, while social policies should also incorporate the opportunities that the gateway cities offer in bridging the divide between metropolitan Australia and the regions. Changes in the global marketplace are behind the growth of jobs and population in urban Australia. To accommodate that growth, gateway cities have capacity for more Australians to work, live and play here. We also have a capability to expand industry, manufacturing, property development, education and health services. In this report, we address the nature and contribution of the gateway cities - also characterised internationally as 'second cities', consider the human dimension of these communities and their contribution to our national development and conclude with a review of policy settings and recommendations focused on future growth.

China's continuing rapid economic growth and expanding involvement in global affairs pose major implications for the power structure of the international system. To more accurately and fully assess the significance of China's emergence for the United States and the global community, it is necessary to gain a more complete understanding of Chinese security thought and behavior. This study addresses such questions as: What are China's most fundamental national security objectives? How has the Chinese state employed force and diplomacy in the pursuit of these objectives over the centuries? What security strategy does China pursue today and how will it evolve in the future? The study asserts that Chinese history, the behavior of earlier rising powers, and the basic structure and logic of international power relations all suggest that, although a strong China will likely become more assertive globally, this possibility is unlikely to emerge before 2015-2020 at the earliest. To handle this situation, the study argues that the United States should adopt a policy of realistic engagement with China that combines efforts to pursue cooperation whenever possible; to prevent, if necessary, the acquisition by China of capabilities that would threaten America's core national security interests; and to remain prepared to cope with the consequences of a more assertive China.

An unreliable guidebook to jewellery accompanied the retrospective exhibition Lisa Walker: She wants to go to her bedroom but she can't be bothered at RMIT Design Hub Gallery, 29 January - 4 May 2019. This volume considers how the work of New Zealand jeweller Lisa Walker can be thought of as a career-length conversation with the question 'What is jewellery?' In doing so it foregrounds the act of asking questions and the pleasure and importance of the 'as yet understood'. The narratives that emerge within this book offer an open ended reflection on Lisa's work, moving across different time periods, going off on tangents but returning to the many concerns of the field in which Lisa has so firmly embedded herself.

As the global ‘data revolution’ accelerates, how can the data rights and interests of indigenous peoples be secured? Premised on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, this book argues that indigenous peoples have inherent and inalienable rights relating to the collection, ownership and application of data about them, and about their lifeways and territories. As the first book to focus on indigenous data sovereignty, it asks: what does data sovereignty mean for indigenous peoples, and how is it being used in their pursuit of self-determination? The varied group of mostly indigenous contributors theorise and conceptualise this fast-emerging field and present case studies that illustrate the challenges and opportunities involved.
