Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled Consumer Electronics Multi-national Corporations in China: Changing Trends and Spatial Implications Submitted by Yip, Chui Ping Lisa For the degree of Master of Arts (China Development Studies) At the University of Hong Kong In June 2005 Consumer Electronics industry in China has undergone extensive transformation since the economic reform in 1979. The participation of Multi-national Corporations in the industry has accelerated the industrial growth by bringing in capital, technology know-how, management skills and oversea network base. This research will demonstrate how Consumer Electronics MNCs have placed an uplift influence on economy, accelerating economic growth in a faster pace. Moreover, the contributions of MNC's are not exclusive to industrial growth, but also the regional development in providing job employment and heightening disposable income and hence raising living standards. The empirical findings in this research reveal that Consumer Electronics industry has been very sensitive to macro economic factors especially the political attributes in China. And, government policy promoting FDI and Consumer Electronics industry has been crucial to the industrial growth. On the micro economic level, cheap and skillful labour teamed up with a sophisticated network of supply chain in supplying parts and components have induced and maximized the MNC's operations, which sharpened their competitiveness among global competitors. In addition, domestic enterprises have become increasingly competitive, in terms of improved technology know-how and exercising more mature marketing approach. Therefore, MNCs could not only compete with price, but also continuously advance themselves in technology and other added values. In conclusion, in order for the Consumer Electronics MNCs to sustain, meeting customer expectation and fulfilling customer satisfaction are the keys to success. Due to the cyclical nature and short product life cycle, higher technical sophistication and innovative products are the definite directions to drive forward to. Secondly, Pearl River Delta has been strong in production and will still be sustainable in the future as the base to set up manufacturers or outsources whereas Yangtze River Delta will have to develop its strengths in the development of Information Technology and software infrastructure to reinforce itself in the industry. Synopsis Issues in the Technological Development of China's Electronic Sector by : Anupam Khanna
Although the electronics industry in China has come a long way since 1949, Chinese authorities acknowledge that it is at least 15-20 years behind the levels of Japan and the U.S., necessitating new and improved productive processes as well as new products in the electronics industry. The paper examines China's electronics industry and its scope for development by considering its application to other indigenous industry, at what level and by what means development should occur, and what institutional structures will need to be set up.

Synopsis The Chinese Electronics Industry in Transition by : Jonathan D. Pollack
"This Note describes and evaluates efforts in the People's Republic of China (PRC) to develop a modern electronics industry. It draws upon an extensive survey of primary and secondary sources on Chinese science and technology, interviews, and field research in China during November 1984; observations and reports from other visitors to the PRC; interviews with Chinese R & D personnel studying in the United States; and interviews with American businessmen involved in trade and technology relations with the PRC. It focuses on China's ability to introduce new products and processes in the R & D production system. The study suggests that, while many factors have impeded technological change, many of the obstacles seem more matters of infrastructure and management than of the availability of technology per se. The Chinese have introduced a number of reforms, with mixed results. On balance, the Chinese electronics industry has achieved noticeable gains in its pursuit of technological innovation, but their full effects are not likely to be felt for some time."--Rand abstracts

Synopsis International Brand Management of Chinese Companies by : Sandra Bell
China is certainly doing its best to keep the world mesmerized by its e- nomic achievements. The Chinese economic growth story that begun 30 years ago has in terms of dynamics and duration long since surpassed all those “economic miracles” which have brought Germany, Japan, and the South East Asian Tigers into the top–league of the industrialized world. The rapid expansion of the Chinese economy has gone along with a fu- fledged re-integration of China into the global economic system. In the course of the last 30 years China has become a major player in the global economy and today is on a trajectory towards even greater prominence. In recent years, the Chinese economy seems to have reached an imp- tant threshold line of economic development and global integration. In the first quarter century of reform and global opening, Chinese enterprises have been largely confined to a ‘passive’ role in the global division of - bor. Foreign enterprises as the proprietors of greatly superior business models, production technologies, management models as well as very competitively established brands have been integrating Chinese players in their value chains and global operations. Lacking the necessary production technologies, products as well as marketing knowledge to successfully - dress OECD-consumers, Chinese enterprises have been hardly able to - ter the global markets without such guidance. Now, this constellation is changing.
