This book Computer Modelling of Seas and Coastal Regions is the first volume of the two volume proceedings of the International Conference on Computer Modelling of Seas and Coastal Regions and Boundary Elements and Fluid Dynamics, held in Southampton, U.K., in April 1992. The importance of accurate modelling of seas and coastal regions is empha sized by the need for predicting their behaviour under extreme conditions. Problems, such as pollution of these areas, have become a major interna tional concern and the related environmental problems need further study using techniques which can be used to determine the ways in which the water systems respond to different effects and try to minimize the damage. They can also lead to the development of early warning systems in combina tion with remote sensing equipment and experimental sampling techniques. Furthermore, once a disaster occurs, the model can be used to optimize the use of the available resources. The conference addresses coastal region modelling both under normal and extreme conditions, with special reference to practical problems, currently being experienced around the world. Many of the delegates are actively involved in the modelling of seas and coastal regions. This volume includes sections on waves, tides, shallow water circulation and channel flow, siltation and sedimentation, pollution problems, and computu tational techniques. Aiming to address the subject of computer modelling of seas and coastal regions under normal and extreme conditions, this volume examines the computer modelling of seas and coastal regions.

Rocky landforms dominate large portions of the world’s coast. Cliffs and shore platforms form spectacular landscapes, yet when compared to other landforms they are relatively unstudied with many contemporary controversies dating back to the mid-nineteenth century. The past decade has seen a reinvigoration of research driven by advances in technology that now enable precise measurements of erosion to the micron scale and quantification of wave energy onto and through cliff edifices to be made, as well as being able to directly date rock surfaces. In order to integrate this diverse range of research this volume’s regional approach first integrates the latest data with longstanding theory and then analyses this research through the boundary conditions that exist in each area. The volume brings together the research leaders in the field; includes chapters on nearly all the major rock coasts of the world and identifies future research needs.

This book presents a wide range of recent advances in hydraulics and water engineering. It contains four sections: hydraulics and open channel flow; hydrology, water resources management and hydroinformatics; maritime hydraulics; ecohydraulics and water quality management. World authorities such as Mike Abbot, I Nezu, A J Metha, M Garcia and P Y Julien have contributed to the book.

This series of five volumes proposes an integrated description of physical processes modeling used by scientific disciplines from meteorology to coastal morphodynamics. Volume 1 describes the physical processes and identifies the main measurement devices used to measure the main parameters that are indispensable to implement all these simulation tools. Volume 2 presents the different theories in an integrated approach: mathematical models as well as conceptual models, used by all disciplines to represent these processes. Volume 3 identifies the main numerical methods used in all these scientific fields to translate mathematical models into numerical tools. Volume 4 is composed of a series of case studies, dedicated to practical applications of these tools in engineering problems. To complete this presentation, volume 5 identifies and describes the modeling software in each discipline.

This book contains updated, reviewed versions of the best papers on “Modelling Coastal Sea Processes” presented at the International Ocean and Atmosphere Pacific Conference, held in Adelaide, South Australia, on 23-27 October 1995. The articles were selected on both scientific merit and usefulness to coastal engineers, physical oceanographers and marine biologists. They cover a range of topics including the modelling of tides and storm surges (especially inundation due to surges), the analysis of modelled or recorded data to permit prediction of tide heights over tidal flats and tidal currents in the presence of coastal eddies, and the modelling of dispersion of fish larvae from spawning grounds to coastal nurseries. Computational techniques are emphasised in line with modern applications, but some analytical techniques have also been included.

This book contains more than 300 papers presented at the 28th International Conference on Coastal Engineering, held in Cardiff, Wales, in July 2002. It is divided into five parts: coastal waves; nearshore currents, swash, and long waves; coastal structures; sediment transport; and coastal morphology, beach nourishment, and coastal management. The papers cover a broad range of topics, including theory, numerical and physical modeling, field measurements, case studies, design, and management. Coastal Engineering 2002 provides engineers, scientists, and planners with state-of-the-art information on coastal engineering and coastal processes.

In many areas nutrient loadings to aquatic ecosystems have increased considerably as a result of population growth, industrial development and urbanisation. This has resulted in enhanced growth of phytoplankton, shifts in composition of the plankton community and changes in the structure of ecosystems, which are often considered to be objectionable. To help understanding these processes and to predict future conditions, a mathematical model, BLOOM, has been developed and applied since 1977. It simulates the biomass and composition of phytoplankton and macro algae in relation to the amount of nutrients, the under water light climate and grazing.
