Synopsis Radiofrequency in Cosmetic Dermatology by : M. Lapidoth

Radiofrequency (RF) has been used in many areas of medicine for some time, but only gained popularity in aesthetics in the early 2000s. Although initial procedures provided variable results, the field of RF has grown dramatically. Currently, a multitude of devices which offer an array of technologies, each geared to specific applications, are on the market. In this book, a comprehensive discussion of the evolving area of RF is provided, and the current and cutting-edge technologies which span from noninvasive treatments of facial wrinkles to invasive body contouring procedures are discussed in detail. The methodologies covered include thermal and ablative modalities, volumetric and fractional approaches, as well as practical aspects of application in clinical practice. Included are also pearls on patient management and prevention and treatment of complications. Finally, RF-based procedures are compared with equivalent laser and surgical approaches in a risk-benefit evaluation. Reviewing the standard of care for RF-based treatments and providing information relevant for clinical decision-making and practice management, this publication is a valuable tool for dermatologists, plastic surgeons and all practitioners who use or are contemplating the introduction of RF into practice.

Synopsis Scar Management - ECAB by : Niti Khunger

A number of scar revision techniques can be utilized to treat specific types of scars, in combination with each other or with adjunctive therapies to achieve optimal results. Pathological conditions like hypertrophic scars and keloids are still challenging. Though a number of therapies exist to treat keloids, such as intralesional steroids and anti-metabolites, cryosurgery, to name a few, none are definitive in treatment. Understanding the molecular basis of keloids may lead to development of new therapies. Striae, also known as ‘stretch marks’, are extremely common, disfiguring and a real challenge to treat. Management of striae is a neglected field of research. Except for topical retinoids, the efficacy satisfactorily. Current treatment options include chemical peels, lasers and collagen induction therapy, with a tendency towards active intervention. However, studies are necessary to determine treatment strategies which produce results that are effective with minimal adverse effects. Post-acne scarring is one of the most common causes of facial scars, causing considerable cosmetic disability. Acne is a common skin disorder, unfortunately affecting a large number of teenagers. Usually patients have a combination of different types of scars; hence no single modality is useful. A combination of procedures is generally required for a satisfactory cosmetic outcome. The use of fractional lasers is gaining importance, as it is a minimally invasive procedure as compared to aggressive resurfacing procedures of the past. Collagen induction therapy is another promising technique. Today, patients are also getting up-to-date information about the various modalities available for scar treatment through media, such as magazines, advertisements and internet. However, exaggerated advertisements and information from nonprofessional sources, particularly with regard to lasers can influence patient expectations and result in unrealistic expectations. Patients need to understand that deep scars cannot be eliminated fully and can only be improved. They usually have high expectations from procedural techniques. Proper counseling is extremely important for a happy and satisfactory outcome. Current innovations and techniques in scar prevention and management and increasing use of minimally invasive surgeries are paving the way toward smoother, less noticeable scars. Every surgeon practicing aesthetics should be well versed with modalities of scar management and this is the aim of this clinical update.

Synopsis Preventing Mental Illness by : Despo Kritsotaki

This book provides an overview of a diverse array of preventive strategies relating to mental illness, and identifies their achievements and shortcomings. The chapters in this collection illustrate how researchers, clinicians and policy makers drew inspiration from divergent fields of knowledge and practice: from eugenics, genetics and medication to mental hygiene, child guidance, social welfare, public health and education; from risk management to radical and social psychiatry, architectural design and environmental psychology. It highlights the shifting patterns of biological, social and psychodynamic models, while adopting a gender perspective and considering professional developments as well as changing social and legal contexts, including deinstitutionalisation and social movements. Through vigorous research, the contributors demonstrate that preventive approaches to mental health have a long history, and point to the conclusion that it might well be possible to learn from such historical attempts. The book also explores which of these approaches are worth considering in future and which are best confined to the past. Within this context, the book aims at stoking and informing debate and conversation about how to prevent mental illness and improve mental health in the years to come.
