Synopsis Combustion Calorimetry and the Heats of Combustion of Cane Sugar, Benzoic Acid, and Naphthalene (Classic Reprint) by : Hobert C. Dickinson
Excerpt from Combustion Calorimetry and the Heats of Combustion of Cane Sugar, Benzoic Acid, and Naphthalene It is necessary In practice to have certain masses, such as a thermometer stem, stirring shaft, and electrical connections, which extend from the calorimeter. If such parts pass through the jacket and are kept at the temperature of the jacket where they enter it on the side toward the calorimeter, their effect on the heat capacity is that just discussed, i. E., neglecting the effect of radia tion, etc., which would, in general, be small, there must be added to the heat capacity a correction, 2%mc. Synopsis Chemical Kinetics by : Luis Arnaut
Chemical Kinetics bridges the gap between beginner and specialist with a path that leads the reader from the phenomenological approach to the rates of chemical reactions to the state-of-the-art calculation of the rate constants of the most prevalent reactions: atom transfers, catalysis, proton transfers, substitution reactions, energy transfers and electron transfers. For the beginner provides the basics: the simplest concepts, the fundamental experiments, and the underlying theories. For the specialist shows where sophisticated experimental and theoretical methods combine to offer a panorama of time-dependent molecular phenomena connected by a new rational. Chemical Kinetics goes far beyond the qualitative description: with the guidance of theory, the path becomes a reaction path that can actually be inspected and calculated. But Chemical Kinetics is more about structure and reactivity than numbers and calculations. A great emphasis in the clarity of the concepts is achieved by illustrating all the theories and mechanisms with recent examples, some of them described with sufficient detail and simplicity to be used in general chemistry and lab courses.* Looking at atoms and molecules, and how molecular structures change with time. * Providing practical examples and detailed theoretical calculations* Of special interest to Industrial Chemistry and Biochemistry

Synopsis Sustainable Agrochemistry by : Sílvio Vaz Jr.
This book presents a broad range of technologies for sustainable agrochemistry, e.g. semiochemicals for pest management, nanotechnology for release of eco-friendly agrochemicals, and green chemistry principles for agriculture. It provides a concise introduction to sustainable agrochemistry for a professional audience, and highlights the main scientific and technological approaches that can be applied to modern agrochemistry. It also discusses various available technologies for reducing the negative impacts of agrochemicals on the environment and human health.

Synopsis Coal Gasification and Its Applications by : David A. Bell
Skyrocketing energy costs have spurred renewed interest in coal gasification. Currently available information on this subject needs to be updated, however, and focused on specific coals and end products. For example, carbon capture and sequestration, previously given little attention, now has a prominent role in coal conversion processes. This book approaches coal gasification and related technologies from a process engineering point of view, with topics chosen to aid the process engineer who is interested in a complete, coal-to-products system. It provides a perspective for engineers and scientists who analyze and improve components of coal conversion processes. The first topic describes the nature and availability of coal. Next, the fundamentals of gasification are described, followed by a description of gasification technologies and gas cleaning processes. The conversion of syngas to electricity, fuels and chemicals is then discussed. Finally, process economics are covered. Emphasis is given to the selection of gasification technology based on the type of coal fed to the gasifier and desired end product: E.g., lower temperature gasifiers produce substantial quantities of methane, which is undesirable in an ammonia synthesis feed. This book also reviews gasification kinetics which is informed by recent papers and process design studies by the US Department of Energy and other groups, and also largely ignored by other gasification books.• Approaches coal gasification and related technologies from a process engineering point of view, providing a perspective for engineers and scientists who analyze and improve components of coal conversion processes • Describes the fundamentals of gasification, gasification technologies, and gas cleaning processes • Emphasizes the importance of the coal types fed to the gasifier and desired end products • Covers gasification kinetics, which was largely ignored by other gasification books - Provides a perspective for engineers and scientists who analyze and improve components of the coal conversion processes - Describes the fundamentals of gasification, gasification technologies, and gas cleaning processes - Covers gasification kinetics, which was largely ignored by other gasification books

Synopsis Advanced Instrumentation, Data Interpretation, and Control of Biotechnological Processes by : J.F. van Impe
Written versions of all 14 lectures presented at the COMETT II course held in Gent, Belgium, in October 1994, presenting recent developments in the emerging field. The five lectures on hardware sensors discuss such matters as flow injection analysis for the on-line monitoring of a waste-water treatment plant, membrane inlet mass spectrometry for characterizing and monitoring biotechnological processes, and the micro-calorimetric characterization of bacterial inocula. The rest explore model based control from perspectives such as on-line data acquisition, error diagnosis and data reconciliation using linear conservation relations, bioprocess model identification, the monitoring and adaptive control of bioprocesses, and predictive control in biotechnology using fuzzy and neural models.
