Synopsis Collocations and Action Research by : Joshua Brook Antle

Collocations and Action Research is a thorough investigation of both the theory and practice behind improving second language learners' vocabulary and fluency through the teaching of multi-word units of language. Taking these collocations as its focus, this book provides a clear and in-depth description of the cognitive processing language learners go through when producing speech in relation to them. Using the findings of a two-year action research study into improving learners' spoken fluency, Joshua Brook Antle also explores the practical sides of collocations, explaining how the research study was constructed and conducted. Orientating the findings within the larger field of second language acquisition, especially within the L2 classroom, the practical applications of the findings are then presented through a series of pedagogical tasks all focusing on collocations and productive fluency. Providing a template for how to conduct an action research study using both qualitative and quantitative research techniques, Collocations and Action Research will appeal to researchers interested in vocabulary and spoken fluency, as well as language instructors wanting to better understand the nature of vocabulary and spoken discourse.

Synopsis Form, Meaning and Function in Collocation by : Haoda Feng

The issue of differences between translational language and native-speaker language has become a topic of increasing interest in linguistics and Translation Studies (TS). One of the primary tasks in this research area is to employ a corpus approach and analyse collocations with authentic language data by comparing comparable corpora consisting of translated and native-speaker texts. Collocation in linguistics and TS refers to the relationship of co-occurrence between lexical items. The book shows that examining the use of collocations constitutes an integral part in assessing the naturalness of second language (L2) use, and therefore can be a valid measure to make a distinction between translational language and native-speaker language. Nevertheless, the role of collocation has not been given enough attention or discussed systematically in TS and, to date, there are hardly any translation theorists who have clarified the mechanism of collocation in TS, by which translators acquire receptive and productive knowledge of collocations in their L2. In addition, previous research in this area is largely confined to Indo-European languages, resulting in a lack of empirical evidence involving Asian languages. This book therefore attempts to bridge the gap in the literature and constitute an integral part in the research area.

Synopsis Insight into EFL Teaching and Issues in Asia by : Evelyn Doman

This collection offers insight into current issues in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Asia. University and secondary school teachers and researchers from nine different countries share experiences they have encountered in their English-language courses, offering suggestions for incorporating new methodologies and techniques both in and outside the classroom. Not only is this book filled with valuable teaching techniques that the contributors have found successful, but it also introduces new ways of dealing with various social situations in the classroom. This book is unique in that it offers the perspective of teaching English in Asia, where students often don’t get many opportunities to engage with the language in informal settings. This book is geared towards university-level instructors and secondary school teachers teaching EFL in Asia, as well as researchers conducting cross-cultural studies which investigate foreign language learning and acquisition in today’s global society. English language teaching has become a booming industry in this region, and with the professionalization of the field comes abundant opportunities for research and informed practices. This book stands alone in its purpose in generating a current view of the situations which EFL teachers and students in Asia today face. Topics discussed in this volume include action research projects, successful teaching practices, innovative language assistance programs, and issues of autonomy and identity.

Synopsis Academic Writing by : Maggie Charles

Contemporary research into written academic discourse has become increasingly polarised between two approaches: corpus linguistics and discourse analysis. This volume presents a selection of recent work by experts in academic written discourse, and illustrates how corpus linguistics and discourse analysis can work as complementary approaches. The overall introduction sets the volume against the backdrop of current work in English for Academic Purposes, and introductions to the each section draw out connections between the chapters and put them into context. The contributors are experts in the field and they cover both novice and expert examples of EAP. The book ends with an afterword that provides an agenda-setting closing perspective on the future of EAP research. It will appeal to reserachers and postgrduates in applied linguistics, corpus linguistics, discourse analysis and EAP.

Synopsis Collocations in a Learner Corpus by : Nadja Nesselhauf

Collocations are both pervasive in language and difficult for language learners, even at an advanced level. In this book, these difficulties are for the first time comprehensively investigated. On the basis of a learner corpus, idiosyncratic collocation use by learners is uncovered, the building material of learner collocations examined, and the factors that contribute to the difficulty of certain groups of collocations identified. An extensive discussion of the implications of the results for the foreign language classroom is also presented, and the contentious issue of the relation of corpus linguistic research and language teaching is thus extended to learner corpus analysis.

Synopsis K-12 Classroom Research in Language Teaching and Learning by : Kate Mastruserio Reynolds

This edited volume presents narratives on a range of methods for research on second language teaching and learning appropriate to the elementary, middle, and high schools (K-12). Teacher researchers in different worldwide contexts narrate their processes to explain and demonstrate practitioner research in context; contributors describe their research from exploring the rationale for the project, to designing the study, analyzing the data, and disseminating it. As such, the book illustrates how K-12 practitioners design, gather, analyze, interpret, and strategically employ data to make data-driven, evidence-based, and analysis-informed instructional, assessment, and programmatic decisions. This volume empowers teacher-researchers and allows them to envision research projects in their own classrooms. Offering new insights into the researchers’ thinking processes, challenges, and solutions, and advocating teacher research for understanding learning, the teaching of language, and the development of SLA, this text will appeal to educators and researchers involved in language education, second language acquisition, TESOL, ESL/EFL/ELT, and applied linguistics.
