This book contains the collected works of A. Adrian Albert, a leading algebraist of the twentieth century. Albert made many important contributions to the theory of the Brauer group and central simple algeras, Riemann matrices, nonassociative algebras and other topics. Part 1 focuses on associative algebras and Riemann matrices part 2 on nonassociative algebras and miscellany. Because much of Albert's work remains of vital interest in contemporary research, this volume will interst mathematicians in a variety of areas.

This volume is a collection of published papers by Robert Steinberg. It contains all of his published papers on group theory, including those on "special" representations (now called Steinberg representations), Coxeter groups, regular nilpotent elements and Galois cohomology. After each paper, there is a section, "Comments on the papers", that contains minor corrections and clarifications and explains how ideas and results have evolved and been used since they first appeared.

This volume presents all the published works -- spanning more than thirty years -- of Julia Bowman Robinson. These papers constitute important contributions to the theory of effectively calculable functions and to its applications. Outstanding among the latter are Robinson's proof of the effective unsolvability of the decision problem for the rational number field (and, consequently of that for the first-order theory of all fields), and her work that provided the central step toward the negative solution of Hilbert's Tenth Problem. These results provide upper bound for what one can hope to obtain in the way of positive solutions to the decision problem for special classes of fields and for special classes of diophantine equations, respectively. Besides thematic unity, Robinson's papers are distinguished by their clarity of purpose and accessibility to non-specialists as well as specialists. The volume also includes an extensive biographical memoir on the life and work of Robinson, who will be remembered not only for her distinctive and vital contributions, but also as the first woman to be elected to the mathematical section of the National Academy of Sciences and as the first woman to be President of the American Mathematical Society.

This book contains papers of the outstanding and versatile mathematician, Witold Hurewicz. Preceding the collection are introductory articles describing Hurewicz's contributions to Borel sets, dimension theory, and algebraic topology. Hurewicz first studied set theory and dimension, and his papers on this topic are especially clear and precise, making them accessible to beginning mathematicians. His work in algebraic topology is marked by five fundamental papers which provide an introduction to homotopy groups and the Hurewicz Theorem concerning the relation between homotopy and singular homology. These papers are included here in their original form along with English translations. Each paper in the collection is followed by a review from one of the major reviewing journals. These reviews were written by eminent mathematicians and serve as excellent abstracts for the papers.

The second volume continues--and presumably concludes since they date to two years after his death--the selection of almost all of Amitsur's (1921-1994) work demonstrating his wide and enduring contribution to algebra, though some in Hebrew and some expositions are not included. The sections here are combinatorial polynomial identity theory and division algebras, each introduced by a mathematician. Eugene Dynkin is a rare example of a contemporary mathematician who has achieved outstanding results in two quite different areas of research: algebra and probability.
