I had not intended issuing a new edition of this work in separate form, as, at the invitation of the Publishers, I am engaged in preparing a more or less comprehensive work on 'The Surgical Diseases of the Urinary Organs.' Owing, however, to professional demands on my time, this work cannot appear as early as I anticipated. In the meantime I find that there is a somewhat pressing demand for the lectures on the prostate. I have, therefore, decided on issuing forthwith the lectures on the prostatic portion of the work in separate form. Consequent on the introduction of my operation of total enucleation of the enlarged prostate, the original lectures, which were delivered in November, 1900, at the Medical Graduates' College and Polyclinic, have been entirely re-written and amplified. Excerpt from Clinical Lectures on Stricture of the Urethra and Enlargement of the Prostate The immediate treatment of retention of urine arising from either of these causes is practically the same. It con sists in clearing out the lower bowel at once by an enema, placing the patient in a hot bath, and giving opium by the mouth, or morphia hypodermically. Should these measures not suffice, a soft olivary catheter of medium size, 8 or 9 of the English scale, should be passed slowly and gently, or a silver catheter if necessary. If there be any difficulty in introducing the catheter, the patient should be anaesthetised, when the spasmodic element will entirely disappear and the instrument, as a rule, pass readily. Organic stricture may be defined as a permanent diminution in the calibre of the urethra, due to the development of organized lymph or scar tissue in its walls.
