This publication is a record of some of the outstanding presentations given at the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy (JSDT). The meeting was held in Kobe in 2018, celebrating the 50-year anniversary of the founding of the JSDT as a voluntary academic association. Therapy for end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) now faces vital issues besides the management of renal anemia and chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder and the selection of the optimal treatment modality for each patient. These issues include the increasing incidence of malnutrition and frailty in the elderly, fragile vascular access, and the balance between medical costs and budgets. Expert members of the JSDT present 15 articles that address these issues. This book serves to promote further progress in understanding the pathogenesis of complications associated with ESKD and providing optimal therapy for patients.

The present book contains the Proceedings of a two day Symposium on Uremic Toxins organized at the University of Ghent in Belgium. A series of guest lectures, free communications and posters have been presented. An international audience of 163 scientists from 16 nationalities listened to and discussed extensively a spectrum of topics brought forward by colleagues and researchers who worked for many years in the field of Uremic Toxins. There is a striking contrast between all the new dialysis strategies available in the work to "clean" the uremic patients and the almost non-progression of our knowledge on uremic toxins in the past decade. In this sense the symposium was felt by all participants as a new start for the research in the biochemical field of the definition of uremia. If the present volume would stimulate new work in this field in order to define uremia, or identify the uremic toxins, the purpose of the organizers would be maximally fulfilled.

2023 is the time to collect available knowledge and basic concepts around extracorporeal blood purification in a book that may become the basis for expansion of awareness in the scientific community and a stimulus for new studies and new discoveries by scientists and investigators. ARF induced by traumatic rhabdomyolysis and crush syndrome is a well-known complication occurring in the wake of natural or manmade disasters. As a matter of fact, it is the second most frequent cause of death, following the direct traumatic impact. Early recognition of the crush syndrome and rapid initiation of fluid replacement is essential as this can dramatically reduce the incidence of ARF. After the Marmara earthquake of 1999, the Turkish Society of Nephrology, in collaboration with the Renal Disaster Relief Task Force of the International Society of Nephrology, prepared special questionnaires to obtain patient data and follow-up information to analyze the extent of the nephrological problems. This book is based on the 639 cases consequently documented, constituting an unprecedented collection of first-hand experience on crush syndrome-related ARF following earthquakes. In addition to the data / analysis gained from the Marmara earthquake, each chapter also summarizes classical information on crush syndrome.
