Synopsis How I Spent My Summer Vacation by : Mark Teague
This wildly funny twist on the "How I spent my summer vacation" school-essay ritual details one child's imaginary adventures over the summer and is perfect for back-to-school reading! Most kids go to camp over the summer, or to Grandma's house, or maybe they're stuck at home. Not Wallace Bleff. He was supposed to visit his Aunt Fern. Instead, Wallace insists, he was carried off by cowboys and taught the ways of the West--from riding buckin' broncos to roping cattle. Lucky for Aunt Fern, he showed up at her house just in time to divert a stampede from her barbecue party! Perfect for back-to-school read-alouds, here's a western fantasy with sparkling illustrations and enough action to knock kids' boots off!

Synopsis Good News by : Barb Hilliard
Designed for K-5 classrooms, these creative bulletin board ideas link Bible themes to classwork. The authors have created 110 different concepts, with complete instructions and illustrations. Following the school year, the bulletin boards can be used as springboards to promote discussion and as reminders of the central message in a particular lesson. The authors have also outlined ideas for classroom activities, suggestions for appropriate books, field trip ideas, party plans, cooperative learning activities, and Web sites. Faith lessons are generously sprinkled throughout. A section called "Bible Heroes from A to Z" provides brief retellings of heroic deeds that bring Bible heroes to life. Even students who know their Bible well will enjoy these 5-minute short stories. The Bible has been a teaching tool since it was written, and Good News: Thematic Bulletin Boards for Christian Classrooms makes it easy.

Synopsis From the Back of the Line by : Gloria Ward Wright
From the Back of the Line: The Views of a Teenager From the 1960s Civil Rights Movement chronicles the life of a young African-American girl who moved from a follower to a leader in human rights. Sixteen-year-old Gloria Ward was arrested four times in 1962 for demonstrating against the ills of segregation and racism in her hometown of Albany, Georgia. With her teenage friends and classmates, she marched behind Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Ralph David Abernathy, Sr., Rev. Charles Sherrod, the Honorable Andrew Young, the late Rev. Samuel Wells and other, older leaders. In a widely circulated newspaper article, Gloria was criticized by a white Albany teenager, Kay Smith, who wasn´t shy about expressing her racist opinions. Kay called Gloria "a pawn and a fool" for her involvement in the demonstrations. Kay eventually came to see civil rights in a different light. Although they never met as teenagers, Kay often wondered about Gloria and what had happened to her later in life. Thirty-five years after the newspaper article ran, Kay found Gloria through a mutual friend and apologized for her racist views and statements. Today the two women are close friends. Their story of forgiveness and friendship is just one part of Gloria´s remarkable life story as human rights activist, teacher, wife, mother, and pastor. From the Back of the Line describes Dr. Wright´s experiences growing up during the civil rights era and moving from the back of the line to leadership positions. She has written this book because she wants young people to know their civil rights history and to understand that they can and should move forward. Her story is told with passion, candor, and light humor. She tells it like it was, how she saw and participated in history From the Back of the Line. The book also contains photographs and an appendix containing quotations from notable civil rights leaders, a summary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, and recommended reading.

Synopsis Celebrate! by : Julie Bisson
Updated information and unbiased, developmentally appropriate strategies and activities to celebrate, rather than exclude, diversity, traditions, and holidays. Among other topics, it includes evaluating holiday activities for appropriateness, addressing commercialism and stereotypes, involving families, and developing inclusive policies. Julie Bisson provides training on subjects ranging from culturally relevant and anti-bias curriculum to holiday curriculum. Louise Derman-Sparks has worked for over fifty years on issues of diversity, social justice, and activism in early childhood.
