Synopsis Furniture and Its Makers of Chester County, Pennsylvania by : Margaret Berwind Schiffer

This book is a 476-page survey of furniture craftsmen working in Chester County, Pennsylvania from its founding in 1682 to 1850 when there was a recognized decline in the handicraft tradition. The settlers included predominently English Quakers for the first half century, after which numbers of Scotch-Irish Presbyterians, Welsh Baptists, Irish Quakers, and Germans became equally important and, later, had major influence in the county. The hand made furniture from the county has certain distinguishing features which are explained in the well-researched text, and illustrated in 175 photographs. Hundreds of cabinetmakers and other craftsmen are profiled in detail from their contemporary public records. The work is an important reference for furniture and social historians alike.

Synopsis Early American Scientific Instruments and Their Makers by : Silvio A. Bedini

Within recent years fairly exhaustive studies have been made on many aspects on American Science and Technology. To make a comprehensive study of American scientific instruments and instrument makers in the American Colonies is no simple matter, partly because of an indifference to the subject in the past, and partly because of the great volume of sources that must be sifted to accomplish it.

Synopsis Dixie Clockmakers by : James Gibbs

The first in-depth study of Southern clockmakers and the magnificent artistry they brought to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century timepieces. Entitled Dixie Clockmakers, this volume traces the development of clockmaking and horological history below the Mason-Dixon line and documents the works of those artisans who designed and constructed some of the world’s finest timepieces. Author James W. Gibbs focuses primarily upon clockmaking in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and the District of Columbia, but attention also is given to eight other states. Included are some sixty photographs illustrating outstanding examples and details of Southern clockmaking. Dixie Clockmakers also lists every known clockmaker and watchmaker in the South during the two centuries, along with nomenclature common at the time, and advertisements used by individual craftsmen.

Synopsis West Chester by : Martha Carson-Gentry

Established in 1799 in one of the three original counties in Pennsylvania, the borough of West Chester is steeped in history. West Chester serves as the county seat and is the home of West Chester University of Pennsylvania, once known as West Chester State Normal School. Two hundred years of memories vital to Pennsylvania's renowned history will be celebrated in the year 1999, West Chester's bicentennial. Much of this history is brought to life in West Chester. A collection of over two hundred images which were generously lent by West Chester residents make up this journey back into the borough's past, covering the years from the dawn of photography up to 1920. Many of the images within have never before appeared in print, and they vary from authentic photograph postcards of the community to the photographs taken between 1875 and 1910 by Gilbert Cope, the co-author of The History of Chester County (1881). Also among the illustrations are old broadsides, one of which is the oldest existing Chester County broadside. The first newspaper printed in Chester County, dating back to 1794, and a sketch of one of West Chester's oldest homes round out this fascinating visual history.
