Synopsis Charles Edward Putney: An Appreciation by : Charles E. Putney Memorial Association
This work is a tribute to a great Vermont educator by one of his pupils. It provides valuable insights into his life and sheds light on his contributions to society. Excerpt: "Charles Edward Putney, the son of David and Mary Putney, was born at Bow, New Hampshire, February 26, 1840. He was one of fourteen children, of whom ten lived to grow to manhood and womanhood. David Putney was a farmer, and Mr. Putney's early years were spent on the farm. He attended district school and went later to Colby Academy, teaching district schools from time to time, and preparing himself to enter Dartmouth College, which he was about to do when the Civil War broke out."

A.A. Co-founder Dr. Bob stated he had had "excellent training" in the Bible as a youngster in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. They include the Town of St. Johnsbury, the Congregational Churches, his own church--the North Congregational Church, Sunday School, Christian Endeavor Society, the enormous impact of the Fairbanks family on the community and church and educational system, Dr. Bob's own deep family involvement in the church and town activities, the St. Johnsbury Academy, the town library (Athenaeum) and Fairbanks Museum, the YMCA, and the Great Awakening of 1875 that brought revivals, Gospel meetings, conversions, prayer, and Bible study to the fore.
